Default Mobil 1 oil cap

Shouldn't GM be sending out new caps to all the Z51 owners, as a good will gesture? Seems odd that so many are buying new caps, not that they are costly or much of an inconvenience, but GM should certainly be held accountable on this snafu....it's almost like a minor recall issue.

You can't be serious.

Recalls are for Safety issues, not an oil cap label. Besides, the Dexos 1 oil cap is technically correct. The oil must meet the Dexos 1 specification. Mobil 1 (and many other oils) meet that specification.

Don't hold you breath waiting for GM to send you a new cap.

What should really happen is since oil maintenance is included with the car GM should send Chevy dealers replacement caps and when the cars are brought in for an oil change the caps should then be automatically swapped out as part of the oil change service.

As much as I would love to get a free cap (had to pay for one), I agree with Zymurgy. The Dexos 1 specification is technically correct so the caps aren't wrong. They just don't specify which brand to use.

John, I hear ya, but it would be as a good will gesture...folks shouldn't have to go though the nonsense of obtaining what should have come with the vehicle from the factory. The 'recall' statement was meant in the lightest sense, as simply using the process to identify which owners should get the cap...the database search could aid in determining the owners.

Or you could get one of these. It has a sticky back that attaches to the original oil cap.

Yeah, apologies on my part. I have too many car parts laying around and my old age doesn't allow me to remember where they all came from.

I actually got the cover from:

http://www.corvettemods.com/C7-Corve...s-_p_9915.html

CorvetteMods has a replacement painted billet oil cap with different covers. I'm sure they would prefer to sell the complete package but they may be willing to sell the sticky-back separately.

Per my local dealer, " We (Tech) put in what is on the cap!" Not now after my oil change and conversation I had with them! So beware.

got the same reply. There appears to be a conflict between GM's statement, and whatever is stated on the caps, for Z51s. Not to mention the numerous threads popping up on the subject. And finally, most would agree the guy putting in the oil may not be as experienced or attentive as a GM trained master mechanic, which when Murphy's Law enters the picture things can go bad quickly.

When you get a chance, post a photo of it (different views) and I'll help look for a match.

If you read the description of the caps on the corvettemods link, the first statement points out for dry sump only.
