Default What's this camera(?) for on my 2014?

When I took off the rear view mirror trim for wiring the RD MirrorTap I noticed the trim piece had an opening that faced the front of the car. With the trim off, I can see what looks to be a very small camera(?) facing forward & mounted in the plastic that the trim piece covered. Does anyone know what this is for? FYI, my 2014 is a July build and shouldn't even have a PDR. I wish I had taken a picture of it.

Well valet requires the front facing camera.

Default 2014 Valet mode

The 2014 Valet mode does not record video or audio. It simply locks the glove box, screen, convertible top, and infotainment system. It is possible that the 2014 trim piece was designed for PDR, but that PDR was not ready in time.

Valet Mode
This will lock the infotainment
system, the infotainment controls,
and screen storage location.
To turn Valet Mode on and off, enter
a four-digit code on the keypad.
Press Enter to go to the
confirmation screen. Re-enter the
four-digit code. Press LOCK to lock
the system. Enter the four-digit code
to unlock the system. Press the
Back screen button to go back to
the previous menu

Seems like a software update could make use of the camera.

Likely still be missing harnesses or other hardware required for complete functionality. I doubt the PDR was fully implemented (if that's in fact what the camera is for) on a 2014.

Nah, not on the inside mirror. I'm wondering if it's anything more than the outer casing for the PDR camera that was intended for 2014 models but that didn't actually appear until the 15s.

Could it be the sensor for the automatic headlights? More of a photocell than a camera? Not sure just thinking out loud...

Nope, that sensor in the one on top of the dash:

Automatic Headlamp
System
When the exterior lamp control is
set to AUTO and it is dark enough
outside, the headlamps and parking
lamps come on automatically.
There is a light sensor on top of the
instrument panel. Do not cover the
sensor, otherwise the headlamps
will come on when they are not
needed.

Naw, it's a camera to check on the white powder on your alternator.

Sounds like the camera for the PDR. Might be worth asking some questions on the Tech/Performance forum here and see if anyone can explain it. Lots of folks there I bet would be intrigued by it , maybe just a software update could give you a PDR. My car was built in July 2014 as well, let me know if you find something out.

Don't ask the dealer, they might want to charge you for that PDR that they missed when writting up the order.

It would be cool if it was a camera and all we needed was a software update. My 2014 was also built in July but I won't be taking apart the rear to check for the camera.

The camera is not small. If you look in through the windshield, what do you see?
