Default Consumer Reports Auto Issue

The Stingray is again recommended for purchase.

It is listed as the sports car with the most satisfied owners. It is #6 overall in their road tests (behind the Tesla Model S, the BMW M235i, the Mercedes S550 AWD, the Porsche 911 Carrera S and the Mercedes E250 Blue Tec). IT is listed as #7 in emergency handling.

For the first time they have a category "Sports Cars with Manual Transmissions". The cars are listed in order of their respective road test scores. The car with the best score, the BMW M235i, is not recommended, probably because it is too new and thus has no track record of reliability. The next three -- in order or their scores -- are the Porsche 911 Carrera S, the Stingray and the Boxster. All are recommended for purchase and all have very satisfied owners.

The next 12 on the list are not recommended, then comes the Camaro with a below average road test score but which is recommended because of its average reliability and very high owner satisfaction. Personally I would not consider it a sports car, but that's another matter.

Oddly missing from the list (and all lists) is the MX-5, which CR loves and describes in glowing detail on p. 54.

In a similar write-up they describe the Stingray as having "blisteringly quick" acceleration and pinpoint handling. They like the seats but note the "low-slung cabin that's difficult to access" and the tire noise.

I know many of you have a great disdain for CR, but perhaps a few will find this interesting.

Thanks for that update. I use CR all the time and usually it's the deciding factor for "appliances" and for cars it's one of many sources of information I use for those purchases. In truth I would have bought my C6 no matter what they said about it. Same for the future C7.

Mazda Miata wasn't shown because of the new Model coming out this summer, designated as a 2016, hasn't been available for CR to drive and rate it.

2016 Mazda Miata is shown on the front page of CR's April Edition and 50th Anniversary Auto Issue. I have a feeling the love fest between CR and Miata is alive and well.

Must admit the Miata for half the price of a C7 is a lot of car for the money, lots of fun to drive and their reliability is top rate.

In an earlier edition of CR (think March 2015), the Stingray was rated number 1 in sports cars, regarding the question, "would you buy this car again". Rating was 95% for the C7.

When CR first bought the C7 before they put it through their testing but had driven the car they reported something to the effect, "Rarely does a new car live up to the hype associated with it's introduction, the C7 exceeds it.

It is understandable why they like it. Hard to find a better value. Also have to spend a whole lot more to get not much more in performance, comfort or looks.

Gawd! "Low slung cabin"? This is a friggin' SPORTS CAR, not a Bentley! I'm 65 and slip in and out with ease. It's all technique. If you don't want a low slung car, buy a mini-van. Also, do you want handling or a little tire noise. Winey report! Gotta find something wrong with the American sports car!

I know a lot of people younger than 65 that can't get in or out of a vette. And the tire noise does suck. Like no one here has complained about it. Winey post!

I'm surprised since it's not an Amana or GE.

CR is an okay reference if you are going in cold, but I do believe they have a bias.

Too many times I've seen ratings where a product has full red circles and a lower price but CR picks the GE or Amana listed 3rd from the top.

Happy to see they didn't throw the C7 in the "dumper".

CR should stick to reviewing appliances like refridgerators, ovens and Miatas. They're way out of their depth when talking about real sports cars!

Yeah, they don't know anything, saying the C7 Stingray and 911S are great sports cars.

Personally never been much of a fan of CR - I think they do a good job with "emotionless objects" but I've never really concurred much with their automotive views. I've always thought it's because they looked at things in a very sterile fashion and I like to try to drive something that has something going for it beyond red and black circles on an evaluation. Emotion IS important when purchasing a vehicle! I'm happy they like the C7 but I don't put much stock in their opinion. I'd NEVER let a magazine have much of an influence on my automotive decision making - they all have their biases.

They're just repeating what everyone else has already said about those cars. Fact is they don't have a clue how to evaluate true sports cars.

You guys keep bashing poor CR.

Without their expert, unbiased evaluations, where else would we learn the truth about the products we buy?

For example, on page 38 of the April 2015 issue, they state this about the Corvette:

"The car's all-aluminum construction optimizes weight and strength to benefit fuel economy and handling."

Silly me.

Without them I would never have known that my car is all-aluminum.
