is the hit you're going to take worth having two more cogs?

Comments from people familiar AND driven both please, not just a heresay opinion from some that have driven one but not the other.

Are there any really sticking points between the 2?
At minimum this. The difference is nowhere near worth the cost of trading a car in.

It's actually crazy. Remember, no matter how good the A8 is it's first year and it will be improved. I'd wait at least 2 years if I had your money.

I agree that to me it wouldn't be worth the cost of trading a one year old car in for a new car, but you state it as though it is an absolute. It may be worth it for some. If I had endless funds and money weren't an option, it is enough of a difference from my experience that it would be worth it, but my financial situation says it is not a good financial decision to make simply for the change in transmission.

If I had endless funds I wouldn't be buying a Corvette

I rented an A6 base vert for 2 days during my honeymoon and put 400 miles on it. And then later on bought an A8 base coupe. I felt no difference in the lower gears honestly. The A8 feels like two additional useless gears. I'm usually in manual paddle mode and I'll maybe use seventh on the highway, never touch eighth. But I felt no appreciable difference from my butt dyno. You never know the early run A8s could have issues. I know mine has some hard gear shifts from the adaptive trans shifting. I would keep the A6.

The A6 in my C7 seems light years better than my A6 in my 08 C6. Hard to believe they are so similar. My C6 always seemed to be in the wrong gear and WOT shifts were noticeably slow. The C7 A6 for me has none of those issues and autcrossing is just fine. I sure would not trade for the difference.
