Can't seem to find any threads on this. A C7 Z06 isn't an option so what are your thoughts? The car will see track time.

Its not for me, for a coworker thats been talking about buying a C7 for a year. Now he's shopping and stumbled onto a ZR1 for the same price. It'll be street driven and road raced with Penske shocks, probably no other mods for a while at least. Does the ZR1 have magnetic damping he'll have to work around? The C7 he'd get would come without the magnetic suspension.
I was thinking the brake maintenance on the ZR1 would be beyond his means if he's going to make it to the track often.

I'd recommend the C7 Z51, if a C7Z isn't an option. A year down the road he can through a blower or Turbo on it & it'll perform much better than the ZR1.

C7....cheaper all around.
Especially if he's doing track time as a hobby, like most of us, and not developing to become a driver for a living.
If the ZR1 has carbon ceramic brakes, just lookup replacement rotors...like $5,000 or something ridiculous.
With either car, it will be more about driver skill than anything else, as is the case for 99% of us on the track.
If strictly used as a track car, I'd recommended C5Z06 with a full cage...total for under $30,000 probably. And only will weigh around 2,900 lbs when gutted out, as opposed to 3,500lbs in ZR1 or C7.

At first I was like ???? But yeah, warranty on the C7 as well. Biggest reason I'm getting a C7Z vs an older ZR1. And looks, but that is subjective.

Just my opinion but I would not want any Supercharged engine if I was planning on doing track days. Especially if you live in a warm area. Supercharged vehicles are typically more prone to heat soak. Not great if you plan on running a road course for any length of time.
I'd go with a C7 with Z51and MRC plus I'd probably get the PDR for tracking the car.

I have the C7Z51, driven and raced a Zr1. On the street, the ZR1 exhibits a lot of bump-steer. Right front tires hits a bump, car goes "slightly" right. Anything but a perfectly smooth road upsets the the ZR1, regardless of what shock mode you're in. The C7Z51 has much better high-speed stability and the bumps don't upset it in the least. Good friend of mine who knows how to drive couldn't believe how well my C7 kept up to his 2013 ZR1, roll race after roll race, for many miles. He could barely pull me well into triple digit speeds. And you can pop the roof and let the sun in with the C7. That's a big deal for me.

I am not a track guy so either 2012 ZR1 or C7 Z06 are not for me though I like them both.
All Vettes drive well around curvy roads even at 50mph which is mosty where I am at
The Z06 is just more car, looks and horsepower.
The one thing the ZR1 has going for it is its going to be much rarer going forward.
Now the if the few things I wish wish for were only available on the Z06 I will get one in 2-3 years but not if GM kills my NRB color ...like they did the beautiful Lime Rock....

Don't know if my opinion counts as I don't have any intention of tracking my 2015 C7. But I was toiling over the same question and even made serious offers on 2012+ ZR1's. In the end, I ordered the C7 and have not looked back. The A8 is so much fun to play with and every passenger is shocked at the quick shifting. The Ergonomics of the C7 are very fresh!
