A8 Owners, Please Advise-starting to get PO'd at this transmission..

So today for the second time since I got the car this happens again. Car has 650 miles on it is all. While driving through a strip mall at slow speed in touring mode I come up to a stop light slowing to a stop, then Bang Bang I hear two loud clunks from the tranny and a severe forward jerk that felt like I had just been rear ended this is how it down shifted into first! Is this NORMAL for this transmission? Like I said only the second time this has happened, but for me its two times to many.

The A8 doesn't seem to slow down every time you let off the gas. More than once I've been surprised and had to it the brakes as it actually felt like I was accelerating. I'm thinking I had slowed enough and it downshifted which provided a little forward motion. It hasn't happened enough for me to figure out the parameters in which it exhibits this behavior, but it's annoying and potentially dangerous. It doesn't make any loud noise when this happens.

So we experienced this harshness since day 1 of getting our Z51 occasionally. We thought it was just normal to the Vette. But after we got our A8 Z06 as well, although sometimes it has some harsh downshifts, it's nowhere near how violent it is on the Z51.
Also, the Z51 has gotten worse that this happens at every stop. I brake, the car downshifts from 2-1, and I get this violent jerk forward that not even the brakes can stop the forward motion (like OP said, it's as if someone rear ends you - at slower speeds of course). In the Z06, when it does happen, I would feel it, but it would not jerk the car forward like that in the Z51.
I'm taking it into the dealer on Monday to address this. It'd be nice if it was just a flash, but the car was produced a couple months after the bulletin posted here so I'm not sure if it would be affected by this. Hopefully they don't keep the car too long. It's my wife's car, and since she's going on a business trip for the next few weeks, it's the perfect time to take it in and give the dealer time to address it.

have you guys tried to relearn the clutches yourselves before bringing to dealer? It worked for my hard shift from 1 to 2 at cold starts. If someone tells me how to post a .pdf ill put the service bulletin with instructions in this thread

This has happened to me before, it does jerk forward with that downshift! I'm going to keep driving and see what happens, I have over 3K miles and it seems to be less frequent now.

I have an 8 speed auto in my 2014 Ram. It does the same thing occasionally when slowing to a stop. Is it normal...I don't think so, but its a company vehicle so I just keep driving it.

It's normal in the Ram, I have 14' as well. Occasional hard downshift to 1st, and tends to hunt for gears a lot between 1-3.

Actually, I have a better analogy to M7 owners instead of the being rear ended analogy. It's as if you come to a stop while still in first without pushing down on the clutch... that huge jerk forward that would happen before the engine stalls. Of course there's no stall from the A8, but that's the jerking feeling you would get.

I also had this issue its not the transmission at all. The transmissions were not programmed properly at the factory. They will fix themselves over time and driving. You can also get it reflashed if you want a quicker fix.

I was going to wait and by the 2015 A8, but bought the 2014 A6 when it first came out. I never understood the folks saying to wait because they would never want to be the first to buy a new technology. The A8 is a new transmission and if i really wanted it, i would have waited for the 2016. The A6 is a great transmission and i don't have any problems with it. It is tried and true. All of the 2015 A8 buyers are the test mules for the A8.

Is there some way to know what gear the A8 is in while in full auto? I know I can paddle shift it to learn but is there a way to see/watch as the gears change or do I just have to do it by feel?

Transmission??
It sounds like a Transmission solenoid problem?? The solenoid is what controls the shift/ shift timing of the transmission and shuts off or builds pressure to your check ***** in valve body.Which is the brain of the transmission. The timing is off, I'm guessing??Causing it to shift down to late or early causing it to slam like that. I would defiantly bring it to a dealer. Sounds electrical to me?? What do I know? I'm a ex transmission guy and a C6 Owner!!!

My A8 in the Z06 does this occasionally (without the 'clunks'). I do not recall my Stingray doing this. (also and A8).

I've experienced a firm downshift, not what I would call "hard," from 2-1 maybe twice in three months of ownership, but not in the past month or so. It's not an issue except when it happens I wonder if I've been bumped from the rear, as has already been described by others.
About a month ago I had an issue where it would not go into "R" initially when cold. It would hesitate with the "R" on the DIC blinking, then go into gear after moving to "D", then back to "R". It only happened three times, so I wasn't able to start any diagnoses, then stopped and has been working flawlessly since. The SM at a local dealer who is a large-volume seller of Corvettes told me it may be a learning issue and wanted to know if the car was throwing any codes. I called OnStar and they said no codes were showing.

Software flash appears to have fixed it! No more super hard downshifts from 2 - 1. However, 1 - 2 is now a little hard, but hopefully that will be learned over time to be smooth like the other shifts.
