When was the last time you needed a spare tire?
Spare tires are unnecessary weight in a car with very little room, a small repair kit and a portable compressor weigh less and will get you to where you want to go.
Now there would be a better option for 100 than that battery protection.

You've had your car for almost a year, and you just found out you don't have a spare tire? There's a book in the glove compartment that you obviously haven't found yet either! It's called 'The Owners Manual', and it will answer almost every question that you've asked, (except for how to stop without using the front bumper!)

If it had a spare, where would it be stored? In the hatchback? (Rhetorical)

I've been riding motorcycles without a spare for more than 40 years. Knock on wood. And I've had a Miata without a spare for more than 5 years. Haven't missed them yet. The Miata does have a jack, airpump and a bottle of slime, though.
I think part of the problem with the 'vette is ground clearance. GM could probably have fit a compact spare without too much trouble. But those tires are smaller in diameter than the regular tires, and would put one corner of the car so close to the ground it might be hazardous.
