High dealer part prices?

High dealer part prices?
Why is it my dealer charges double or even triple the price for a part compared to every online source? Mobil 1, almost $10 par quart! Other parts were 3x. I was not getting service, just buying the parts. I guess I learned my lesson once again, don't go to the dealer, for anything.

The dealer (and most other mechanics) has a "list price" that they charge. This allows them to make money off of parts and labor. If you supply your own parts they usually have a "customer supplies part" charge to make up for that. Their business is fixing vehicles, not selling parts.
On the other hand, if you show them the online price (shipped) they may match it or get close to try and earn your business. Both local dealers parts counters I have asked did. One was a Toyota dealer and the other Chevrolet.

Try it sometime.
You'll see Sales/Finance/Mgrs/Mechanics/Clerical/Building Maint people. Add lights, heat/cool, taxes (up the yeayea) & you see a very large overhead. So yes dealerships charge retail. They have to.
There're things one does & doesn't use a dealership for, parts fall under don't. Doing the labor/or having someone else doing it?
Use cyberspace for discounted parts, not a retail store.

Dealer prices for common consumables like oil & filters, and more common parts, have always been high, it's nothing new. That's why there are NAPA and lots of other parts stores. I wouldn't think of going to a dealer for consumables or common parts, just for unique or hard to find parts.

Just do a search online for the best price, including shipping and bring it to the dealer. You'll be surprised at what the dealer can do for you if you ask. I did and the parts man beat the online price.

Dealers have limited sales, generally local, online and Walmart do volume sales. All are in the business of making money. As has been said many times before use the dealer for warranty and the others to satisfy your need for frugality.

And an online site doesn't have a warehouse, website, people, packaging, returns, etc. Come on people, think before you post obviously wrong comments.

Since no one has mentioned it...
I guess I need to break it to the newbies amongst us.
It is called the Corvette Tax
Aftermarketers get it too. That is how they can sell a plastic liner for a cup holder and we will pay 50 bucks for it.
I hope no one is overly disallusioned. The good news is that Corvettes don't break down too often.

I have found that CF vendor GMpartsdirect.com is one of the best sources for OEM GM parts.
GMpartsdirect.com is the on-line parts dept of Flow Chevrolet (Flow Automotive) out of Winston-Salem, NC. Flow Automotive is a mega dealer.
This is a mega auto dealer family. So, if your looking for OEM parts, these are the "go-to" guys. Service is great, website easy to use and great delivery of parts and excellent pricing. They will price match just about any dealer.

iagree: Has worked well for me. The dealer's parts man will reduce their price when you show them a copy of your online price. I have saved a bunch of $.

I go to the dealer for things that need to be fixed under warranty or for things I just do not have the tools/tech knowledge to do myself. For most parts though, I either use online sources or local parts stores.
