Default Dealer greed or buyer desperation?

Visited dealer today for 500 mile break in oil change
(thanks guys for copies of the Service Bulletins!)

Walking around showroom, saw new BLACK Z06
Paint was SO BAD it looked like someone shot-peened the car before painting!

What caught my eye was the additional items added to the sticker price (also on a Z51 and base car in showroom)

$595 for leather and fabric protection
$595 for Door Edge Protection
$595 for "pin striping" must have been a black pin stripe
because I could not see it!

Dealer must be counting on buyer's total innocence or stupidity

yup dealers have been trying to screw there customers like this for years now. I once purchased a Cadillac and it had a second sticker that read Heratage wax and polish for $500.00. I told the GM that if it was there he better scrape it off becsuse I never pay for anything I can't see when buying a car.

Reminds me of the first gen Miatas that came with a sticker item for ADP. Additional Dealer Profit. They got it too because the car was so popular at first.

It's just like when "we" sell a used car....we ask a little higher price and then negotiate.

Many, many years ago I worked for a new car dealer. It was American Motors Corporation (AMC), which should be a clue as to how back I am talking about. Anyway, even in those days customers were charged $500.00 extra for "paint sealant". We would even demonstrate for the customers, the value of having this "paint sealant" applied to their cars before delivery by lighting a match, holding it to the paint until it left an ugly brown residue, then magically wiping the residue away with a simple tissue (VERY impressive).

This "paint sealant" was just common car wax at $2.00 a can (which waxed 12-15 cars BTW)

These tactics are certainly not "new"...

PUDDY: (While punching up numbers on a calculator) (Back to the transaction) I just left out a couple of things:

rust-proofing..

JERRY: "Rust-proofing"?

PUDDY: (Reading off what he’s adding up on the calculator) Transport charge, storage surcharge, additional overcharge, finder’s fee

JERRY: "Finder’s fee"? It was on the lot!

PUDDY: Yeah, that’s right. (Continues reading off) Floor mats, keys..

JERRY: ‘Keys"?!

PUDDY: How ya gonna start it?

I'd pay $500 for paint correction to remove any orange peel or clear coat scratches / swirl marks, if they could do it right.

Meanwhile back in reality, I don't want a dealership detailer going near my car.

They're a For-Profit company, selling a product.

They can ask, but you don't have to pay for them.

I usually ignore those add ons, & just offer them a fair price.
& be ready to walk.

And if someone is stupid enough to pay all those add on charges, then they deserve what they get.

Could just be honest and call it "market adjustment". Then negotiate from there. Nothing wrong with asking for it, doesn't mean you'll get it.

Dealer add-ons... another reason for Museum Delivery. I had no additional upcharges for crap like sealers, wax, etc. Also no dealer stickers or badges. Of course there is the MD upcharge but it was worth it for the VIP tours and hoopla. Also, I had dealers quote me $500 to $600 doc fee. I told all of them where to stick it. I wasn't going to pay a fee to be able to pay for the car. I called one dealer and talked to the sales manager who insisted on the charge. A salesman from that very dealership called me back and told me he could "make that disappear". He got my business. If you don't ask.. the answer is ALWAYS NO.

Guys, it's obviously a standard dealer add sticker they apply to every car in the back. If you were to walk the lot you would probably see this sticker on every car. And since most here seem smart enough to know to tell the dealer you don't want the add ons the truth is some won't bother asking and then the dealer makes more money. The fact the dealer wants to maximize profit isn't greed, it's called the free market system. They are free to ask whatever price they want and we are free not to pay it......

Actually, I don't mind that one quite so much because at least its honest. I would not pay it in a million years, but at least they are admitting the truth rather than adding a bunch of useless or "fake" options.

All that said, any time I've been in a dealership that had such markups, I just turned around and walked back out. There are plenty of dealers around. I've also seen a lot less of that in recent years; my theory being its because of the Internet. Its too easy to do a couple of quick searches and sniff out the BS.
