8 speed auto trans locking up in 5th gear
I have had a problem with my 8 speed automatic locking in 5th gear when I push down on the gas. It will go down to 5th gear and not shift. I have to put it in manual and go back to automatic and then it shifts. Is there a certain rpm that the trans will lock?

Have you tried waiting a few minutes with a lighter touch on the accelerator to see if it, um, "normalizes"? It is possible the transmission (which is very smart) thinks you are intending to do some spirited driving, and is seeking to assist your efforts.
Just a thought.

More data needed Your A-8 has PAS/PAL (Performance Algorithm Shifting/Performance Algorithm Liftfoot) like many recent GM automatics and it is designed to hold a lower gear after a high throttle downshift to that gear after you reduce throttle assuming you may quickly be resuming high throttle. This helps provide some braking through a curve and leaves your C7 set up for a fast exit from the curve.
However, HOW fast were you going??? Redline in 4th results in well over 100 MPH so for a high throttle down shift to only go as low as 5th means you were really moving
