For Those of You Who Had the Top Come Off?
Did you forget to latch it or was it latched incorrectly? I took the top off and went for a drive this weekend and I'm a little paranoid about losing the top. It seemed pretty easy to put back on and seems securely latched, but I don't want to join the club.

When I first got my C5 back in 2000 I was always slightly paranoid about that. But I quickly learned that its just not likely to happen and stopped worrying. I've never heard of one coming off.

The only latched top I have heard of coming off was a beat up track car. I take my targa off frequently and it's pretty easy to remember to latch it I am not worried about it coming off when driving but if it ever does..oh well. There are worse things in life.

I forgot to latch the top.
I put the top in place then walked to the back of my C6 to close the hatch. Then I just walked away.
I drove the car about two hours later and it flew off.
Yes, I know I am stupid. Forgetfulness happens like this in old age.

My Number 1 rule when replacing the top:
ALWAYS LATCH THE TOP IMMEDIATELY UPON PLACING IT ON THE CAR!
It was a rule I've had in place since I purchased my first Vette in 2008. Every instance I've seen of someone losing their top was because they placed it on the car, decided to complete another task and latch it "later" only to forget to latch it and end up losing a top. Again, the number one rule:
ALWAYS LATCH THE TOP IMMEDIATELY UPON PLACING IT ON THE CAR!
You will be fine.

I was driving home last night and heard a weird whistling sound coming from what I thought was the window seal.
Nope, forgot to latch down the driver's side of the roof. Derp.

I don't mean to alarm anyone, but...
One morning when I was driving my C6 coupe to work I was running around 75 mph on the freeway when all of a sudden my roof flew off. All of the latches were properly latched. The outer skin delaminated from the frame and the result was horrifying. Luckily the flying panel didn't strike another vehicle or (worse yet) a motorcyclist.
Again, this was a C6, not a C7. The problem affected quite a few C6s. There was a recall and my replacement panel was fine for the rest of the time I owned the car.
The root of the problem was incompatibility between the adhesive and the material that the outer skin was made from. GM changed the material used for the outer skin and replaced quite a few of the old panels. I'm not aware of any new panels failing.
I know of no reasons to be concerned of failure of the C7 roof panels as they're not made of the same materials as the C6 panels that failed.

You would think that nanny lawyers at Gooberment Motor would have put a "Hatch Ajar" message on the DIC after all these years? Oh, that's right - people have to die first before they will. They like selling new tops!

Before putting the roof on you have lower the visors and pull the 2 large front handles out so they are sticking straight out. How do you forget to latch the roof when you have 2 giant handles sticking out in front of you and your visors are down? . Not trolling just asking how this can be an oversight.

The flying roof club has lot of members. People get distracted etc.....easy to do and folks are NOT stupid.
YOU MUST DEVELOP A CONSISTENT HABIT when installing the top!!!
Put down the phone...... I move both my visors to the side before I put the top on. For me moving those visors back into place talks to me saying latches in place????
I also like the post above about pushing on the top.
You just need to develop a habit and not vary from it.
Most important is complete concentration!!!!
With all this technology hell with front cameras....... put a sensor that detects an open latch.
