So, I finally tried Eco mode.

Interesting, as mine is just the opposite. I feel the slightest little bump/jerk when going from 8 to 4. It's possible 4 to 8 is masked as the NPP opens back up and adds its own rumble/noise.

It appears that the econ mode is always on even if in Tour or Sport mode. Driving around town I noticed on my DIC that was continually changing from v4 to v8 in the T and S mode.

Personally I don't think Eco mode Eco's at all really. My last test, a road trip from San Diego to San Francisco. On the way up I kept it on Eco mode and used the trip A & B odometers to measure things. My average gas mileage on the A trip from San Diego -> San Francisco was 22.3 MPG.
On the way back I reset the B trip odometer and I set it to Sport mode for the trip from San Francisco -> San Diego. The B trip odometer read 24.5 MPG on the way back! IOW better gas mileage in Sports mode!

With the realtime MPG reading I found no difference between eco and sport.

I've been stubborn and never put my M7 Z51 in Eco mode. After all, I didn't buy a 460HP V8 to save gas and diddle around. That and I'm a bit uneasy with half the cylinders getting less/more wear than the others. I'm sure that's naive thinking, but...
That said, after 3.5 months and 4500 miles I decided I should see if Eco mode was functioning properly. I have to say I was pretty impressed with the integration. Aside from a slight jerk when entering v-4 mode the system is seamless. When you need the power she goes back to all cylinders firing nearly instantaneously. Maybe I'll actually use it now.

In my '14 M7, I've only used Eco on longer highway trips, and the transition is smooth and seamless, no jerk at all. The only thing I've ever noticed is a difference in sound.
I am very happy that the only time you see V4 in an M7 is in Eco.

In the GS A8, I drove over to Seattle averaging 85 and hitting 100 to 130 occasionally. That trip generated 19 mpg average. I had AFM turned off. While going 85 on flat ground for 2 hours I did get 22.

I bought my '16 Z51 M7 with no intention of ever using eco mode and AFM. Only real reason to use it is for better gas mileage. Not a factor in my purchase decision.
But , on a 6000 mile cross country road trip last year, while travelling east on I70 in Eastern Colorado into Kansas, I ran a full tank in Eco with the Cruise set at 76 mph. Just for braggin' rights, I thought.
The car was constantly changing from V4 to V8 at every bend in the highway and every bridge and overpass. never in V4 for more than 2 minutes, near as I could tell, I went 395 miles on the tank and put in 15.1 gals which works out to 26.1 mpg.
For the whole 6000 miles I had a best of 29.1 and a worst of 17.1 and averaged 26.1 for the entire 6000 miles. Remarkably good mileage to my mind
Of course your results may vary, but no advantage to Eco mode, that I could demonstrate.

On the trip mentioned above, I was unloading the car at a Motel in Utah next to a couple in a new Porsche Carrera. We passed some pleasantries and then the guy asked about my mileage, saying that he got 27 mpg. I said I was right in the same ball park at 27+ but mine cost less than $65000. With that his wife burst out laughing and i took my bag to the room.

About 8mpg on a 1000 mile road trip. Your 1 or 2 is way off. You should test

34.6 mpg
On a 392 mile leg from Phoenix to San Diego a couple of years ago, in my 2014 3LT A6, I got 34.6 MPG using ECO mode most of the time. Absolutely seamless with no jerking whatsoever. For the entire round trip, including local driving in and around SD, I ended up getting 32.1 MPG for a total trip of 1,238 miles.
I haven't tested ECO mode in my 2017 Grand Sport A8 yet because, ironically I only have 392 miles on it. But I do know that it is also seamless with no jerking. I will use it on my next long road trip. I'm curious to see if I can get 34.6 MPG again. I doubt it though.
PS....man do I love my GS.....
