Default Michelin Tire Cosmetic Defect ??

2015 C7 with only the left rear tire (285/35ZR19) having this yellow band around the inside circumference of the tire. 525 miles and appears to be below the raised markings suggesting it is not from wear during transport. I suspect it is a cosmetic vs. functional defect during manufacturing, but will confirm with Michelin. It cannot be cleaned and has anyone else seen something similar?

From the look of this it seems to be something that was applied to the tire. There is excess at the ridges of the letters as if it was brushed or rubbed on. It's hard to tell from the picture angle but it looks too even to have been done on the car, especially with your mileage, unless you see some mark in the wheel well. Maybe even done from the factory while mounting. From the pic it appears to be cracking which would indicate some sort of drying. I also see a little on the edge of the tread. Certainly odd but appears to be on the surface and not a defect to me.

Did you try a brush like we used to use to wash the blue off white lettering on tires?
Perhaps even an eraser to get some heat and friction?

The more I look at it the more it reminds me of the residue from a grease pencil.

Could be from car carrier? When car was loaded/unloaded tire rubbed against ramp edge causing paint transfer unto tire.

Yep, it looks like some rubbing happened to the rim as well.

No car wash rails, mark is on tread as well to some degree, does not come off with a towel, but I'll try a brush. Will share results after I consult with Michelin and dealer.

Looks like it is on the tread too. Try a little lacquer thinner, see if that removes it. Don't go overboard, just a wet paper towel edge.

If all else fails and you can't clean it off, try a black Magic Marker to at least make the color difference less noticeable. Good luck.

I kept looking at it and agree, the wheel and the tread portion of the tire were also scraped. I'd file a claim through the dealer for the transport company to furnish a new mounted tire on a new wheel. I doubt warranty would cover it unless it covers damage en-route to dealer. Don't think it does.

Take the wheel off, get yourself some lacquer thinner and a piece of a old towel and rub your butt off, it will clean up. keep the rag wet with the thinner, it evaporates quick.

Has your car ever been through an automatic car wash? Those typically have guide rails that are often yellow and are on the driver's side of the car. Since the rear wheel is wider than the front, the front can make it through OK and the rear can rub.

The dealer will see its paint transfer and clean it off. It will come off.
No reason to replace the tire.

Here's the feedback from Michelin. Dealer had no idea, local Michelin said it was paint from the floor, and here's what the Michelin factory said after they reviewed the pictures.

"Thank you for supplying the photos.

Our product marketing department reviewed and determined the markings are not from Michelin's manufacturing process. It is likely the marking was done at the tire mounting facility to identify which side of the tire is to mounted inward.

We appreciate your business and thank you for choosing Michelin."

I think the answers are all poor and i'm done.

Thanks for the input, but no, the car has not seen a car wash.

Hasn't seen a car wash.... since you had the car! I would bet my last dollar that it is paint transfer from an inside rail from a transporter, inspection pit or car wash.

The scrapes on the inner part of your wheel seem to indicate the car has been through some type of rail that was both too narrow for the rear tire and painted yellow (accounts for the paint transfer on the tire). Since you haven't taken it through a car wash, either the dealer ran it through one prior to delivery or the transport car carrier loaded/unloaded improperly.
Suggest trying to get the dealer to "make it right". The paint needs to come off of the tire (or replace with new tires) and the wheels need to be replaced. Good luck and let us know what happens

Note the yellow on the tread portion, which is well away from the sidewall. 100% certain a car wash was not used as I was present when the Tyvek was removed.
