Why does Apple block Google maps when using Apple CarPlay?
One of the main reasons I would be interested in using Apple CarPlay is to have Google maps appear on the infotainment screen, but our friends from Apple deny us this app. Why Apple, why?

It may be that Apple Car Play relies on certain APIs that Google Maps doesn't support. I'm pretty sure that's the case with Android Auto, so for now Google Maps is the only mapping app supported.
Now whether Apple publishes those APIs to allow Google Maps to work is a separate question. Apple seems to have forgotten that the best way to retain customers is to focus on giving those customers what they want. Not that Google is perfect, but at least they let their products work on iPhones.

I think Glen has it right. Digging into some history regarding the relationship between these two companies is informative.

I plugged my iphone (5s) into the USB ports (all 3 of the ports) in my 2016 z. I've tried unlocking the display of the phone, and when I go to the projection option on the car's LCD it says please connect a valid USB device. I can listen to music etc from my phone via USB, but it never initiates car play. :P What am I doing wrong??
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

Don't have an iPhone, but I'm guessing that either there's an app you need to install on the phone to enable car play on the device, or the 5s is too old.
I suspect the first. I know Android phones need to download and install an app to work with Android Auto.

It should be plug and play Fawk. Are you running the most current iOS? Does your phone charge when it's plugged into any of the USB ports? I had a bad USB card out of the gate on my Ford they had to replace when I bought it. I'm not sure which port you're supposed to use because I don't have my 2016 yet, but that could be the problem.

I disabled Siri I guess and that's why it wasn't working. Thanks for the advice! Though due to the lovely summer weather in AZ my iphone overheats while it's plugged in and in the center console.

That's why (amongst other reasons) CarPlay doesn't have a different map program, they all have to support the use of Siri for hands free operation.

Apple is greedy.

When you buy an iPhone you agree to use whatever apple allows you to use (which may change at any time). One of the main reasons I've never bought into the apple hype...

I'm surprised here so many people here don't understand how business works. If Apple can pull off a proprietary business model, more power to them, a lot of companies can't.... yes , they take it to the extreme degree , but then again, it builds shareholder value, profit, and growth. I too don't like it in some respects, but I certainly understand it.

Apple has its own maps program. I work in digital marketing and it was a big deal when we had to start to optimize local businesses to appear in both Apple Maps and Google Maps, effectively doubling the work for small business owners who aren't technically-savvy.
If John Q. Customer has an iPhone that pulls only from Apple Maps, and your business doesn't appear in Apple Maps/Safari when they search for your business type, then you don't exist for that Apple Maps customer even though you DO in Google Maps/Google and in this place called "reality."
That's the issue in digital. You have to appear to win customers. If you don't, you're effectively invisible.
