Good Hotel/Motel Close to the Fairgrounds at Carlisle
Any suggestions for a good place to stay close to the fairgrounds. I don't want to sat as far away as harrisburg.

You are better off getting a room out off one of the exits on I-81, I was in the one in town close by the fair grounds, one look at the room and I got my money then left.

A lot of people book them a year in advance. You may be lucky if you get as close as Harrisburg. When choosing a location make sure you consider traffic in Carlisle and how long it might take to get into the fair grounds. I used to just drive in for one day and always came into Carlisle from the North taking I 81 S from Harrisburg to PA Rte. 944 west to PA Rte 34 south. That brought me right into the intersection where Gate 3 to the Fairgrounds is located. If you are in a Vette you can pay to be part of the Funfield or the Car show and go in at Gate 3. Otherwise, you can turn right at Gate 3 and find a bazillion private residences that are renting out their yards for parking. $5 for a day isn't too bad. Bill

Burning Brakes
All the local hotels on the main strip fill up the 2nd week of the previous years show. The only way you might get a room is if someone cancels soon. But worse case you get a hotel a little further out. But either way Dont miss the show!! Let me know if you have no luck as I have 6 rooms reserved but may have an extra. Mine is the Hampton Inn right down the road from the fairgrounds. Newly built

Melting Slicks
I recently canceled one of my two rooms at the Super 8. Never stayed there but will assume it's pretty much a typical crappy local hotel. Seems all the local hotels are run by the same people who own/operate the gas stations in NJ! Good luck getting a room. Carlisle is the feature. The room is just a place to get a few hours sleep. Don't expect five star accommodations.
