I think it was my dad that theorized that the black wheels are actually cheaper to produce as they actually sell more C7s with black wheels than silver wheels. Economy of scale. Another money grab is getting red calipers with a Z06 by default yet it costs $600 for black calipers, while Stingrays get black calipers by default and you have to pay $600 for red calipers. Like a vacuum cleaner to the wallet...

Except you will pay $900 for the privalege to have calipers in a color other than red.

But you are correct, if they can sell something for a higher price, why wouldn't GM do it?

Right. People buy Corvettes for lots of different reasons, and some are into customization from the factory. GM is happy to take their dollars, has figured out pretty much what people are willing to spend for different options.

From the inside while driving, you can't see what color the wheels and calipers are, so choose accordingly. Are you only interested in basic function, or are you willing to spend more for a unique look?

I could be wrong , but, I think it's a way for the Dealer to make more of a profit over the base car. I guess I'm sayin, it's designed for the dealer and not so much for GM...

Why do black wheels have chrome lug nuts and not black? Not even available as an option.

While both parties reap the rewards, I can assure you that GM gets more of the incremental dollars than the dealers do.

My favorite ones are $275 for door sill plates that say "Stingray" instead of "Corvette" and $210 for center caps that have "Z51", Jake, or "Stingray" instead of the C7 flags. They're total rip-offs IMO.

Default Black Wheels

There are many reasons for the additional cost; additional paint inventory, additional handling, additional part numbers to handle and keep track of,cost of changing from one color to another, labor and material. Helpful to understand all the factors that go into 'product cost'.

However, we have them, and they are the BEST wheels we have ever had on a Vette; love them.

Why do they charge $100 for Carbon Flash Package? Why do the charge $495 for yellow or red calipers on a Z51 when you get black ones? Why do I pay a surcharge for Laguna Blue?

Unfortunately (or fortunately) I was "happy" to pay it to get those options...

A manufacturer doesn't miss an opportunity to charge extra for something.

But they still have a lot to learn from the commercial airline industry. Starting in 2017 the first lug nut for each wheel is free but there is a surcharge for any additional lug nuts. Because we have overbooked C7 production instead you will receive a Malibu and a certificate for a free meal at McDonalds....

Good to see someone here understands how things work.

For everyone else sure these extras have a profit margin built into their price. But they do have an increased cost for GM as well.

Or you could just opt for the free ones and buy some black spray paint at Wally world and call it a day. Should come out real nice...

The good news is that you don't have to get or pay for any of these options if you don't want to. And there are also aftermarket options for much of it if you do want it. Its all over priced in my book but at least its optional.

Prime example of the madness. My local dealer has an Arctic White 2016 Z51 3LT on his lot that actually has an MSRP of $83,905...and has graciously marked it down $4,000 to $79,905...but its still a Stingray that costs as much as an entry level Z06...largely from what I consider eye candy options other than the seats, MSRC, and A8.

-------------------------------------------
Pricing
Destination Charge $995.00
Installed Options
Competition Sport bucket seats $2,495.00
Visible carbon fiber weave hood insert $1,995.00
Visible carbon-fiber roof panel with body-color surround $1,995.00
Battery Protection Package $100.00
Carbon Flash Badge Package $100.00
Carbon fiber interior trim $995.00
Magnetic Selective Ride Control™ $1,795.00
Red-painted brake calipers $595.00
8-speed paddle shift transmission $1,725.00
19" front/20" rear, Black aluminum wheels $495.00
Carbon Flash-painted rear spoiler and outside mirrors $100.00
Cargo mat, reversible with Stingray® logo, Genuine Corvette® Accessory $205.00
Cargo shade, Genuine Corvette® Accessory $170.00
Z51 3LT $9,745.00
Total Options $22,510.00
MSRP* $83,905.00
