Why are black painted wheels $495?

I think it was my dad that theorized that the black wheels are actually cheaper to produce as they actually sell more C7s with black wheels than silver wheels. Economy of scale. Another money grab is getting red calipers with a Z06 by default yet it costs $600 for black calipers, while Stingrays get black calipers by default and you have to pay $600 for red calipers. Like a vacuum cleaner to the wallet...

Right. People buy Corvettes for lots of different reasons, and some are into customization from the factory. GM is happy to take their dollars, has figured out pretty much what people are willing to spend for different options.
From the inside while driving, you can't see what color the wheels and calipers are, so choose accordingly. Are you only interested in basic function, or are you willing to spend more for a unique look?

My favorite ones are $275 for door sill plates that say "Stingray" instead of "Corvette" and $210 for center caps that have "Z51", Jake, or "Stingray" instead of the C7 flags. They're total rip-offs IMO.

There are many reasons for the additional cost; additional paint inventory, additional handling, additional part numbers to handle and keep track of,cost of changing from one color to another, labor and material. Helpful to understand all the factors that go into 'product cost'.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) I was "happy" to pay it to get those options...

But they still have a lot to learn from the commercial airline industry. Starting in 2017 the first lug nut for each wheel is free but there is a surcharge for any additional lug nuts. Because we have overbooked C7 production instead you will receive a Malibu and a certificate for a free meal at McDonalds....

For everyone else sure these extras have a profit margin built into their price. But they do have an increased cost for GM as well.

The good news is that you don't have to get or pay for any of these options if you don't want to. And there are also aftermarket options for much of it if you do want it. Its all over priced in my book but at least its optional.
Prime example of the madness. My local dealer has an Arctic White 2016 Z51 3LT on his lot that actually has an MSRP of $83,905...and has graciously marked it down $4,000 to $79,905...but its still a Stingray that costs as much as an entry level Z06...largely from what I consider eye candy options other than the seats, MSRC, and A8.
