Default A8 transmission "feature"?

Hi everyone,

Long time lurker, first time poster. I took delivery of a 2015 A8 stingray a few months ago (best car I've ever owned! ) and never noticed this "feature?" until today. When in track mode and D mode, after using the paddles to upshift/downshift, the drive mode lever goes from D to M automatically. Going back to D to have the transmission automatically shift gears requires going into N, then back to D. Is this a normal feature/is it safe to do so while driving? I really baby this car and would be stunned to find this to be a transmission problem this early in the game - a measly 3800 miles. Read through the manual with no luck. Thanks for your input!

Not my experience, With the car in D if I use my paddles the dash will change to M. It will switch back to D and begin to shift on it's own again if I don't use the paddles for a period of time .... Like 30 seconds maybe and it goes back to D?

After a few seconds (I think the manual said 6?) in any other mode, the car switches back to D automatically. But while in track and pushing the paddles, the actual shift lever switches to M! Bizarre

The shifter does not move to M, only the 'light' indicator changes to 'M', but as you say above the light changes back to 'D' after a few seconds of non paddle use. You should not shift into neutral while driving!

I am such a goofball. Literally had to go for a drive to test that out. What a nice touch! Now I hope I didn't mess my tranny up... the car didn't jump or lurch so I hope everything's okay! Thanks!!

You can also change it back to D by holding the up shift paddle for 2 or 3 seconds while driving at a steady speed.

and if you tap once and then hold the downshift paddle, it will jump down to the lowest possible gear- a lot of fun going through tunnels ;-)

It's also helpful to read the manual.

I have not notice that, but have tried the paddles while in D and found they do take control.

I thought I had a problem with the transmission when I passed a guy on a 2 lane road. The tranny downshifted to 5th and then stayed there after I let up on the accelerator for a while, so I hit the upshift paddle to go back to 8th gear. All was fine after that, but I was just cruising at 63 mph. I checked with the tranny guy at the dealership and was told that was normal. The tranny thinks your racing so it holds the gear until it figures out you're not racing.

This is hit-or-miss for me - I've had a couple of times where this approach has resulted in the car rapidly upshifting until it couldn't any more (when the computer decides any more would stall the car) and its left in like 5th or 6th.
