Hi,
On Thanksgiving no less, I got my first ticket in over 30 years. In CA on Hwy 4 doing 84 in a 65. I was in the middle lane and going with the flow of traffic, goes my LBR was easy to spot.
Does anybody know if I can go to traffic school on this and about how much for the ticket?
Thanks, Jerry

Jerry, sorry about your ticket. As a former LEO in CA, here is my opinion, which is worth about a cup of coffee....
Once your ticket is posted, sign up for traffic school. CA fines for speeding are outrageous, as is the cost of traffic school, but at least the points are erased from your record. Forget the attorney ($$), especially if you tagged by laser or radar. Departments are meticulous about calibrating and training on these devices. Did you get the ticket in the county you reside in?
I am philosophical about speeding tickets. Haven't gotten one yet, but when I think of all the times I've wildly exceeded the limits on my motorcycle, I figure when I do get one it'll be deserved.
Good luck and all the best to you.
Steve

Really? I don't think the legal system
is supposed operate under a double
standard: Do like I say, not like I do.
A CHP officer is expected to know
traffic law authoratively. On patrol, he would be expected to follow the law. That is what I expected.
Although,
If cop was dishonest enough to write the ticket in the first place, he won't
have trouble bending the truth.
And, I've seen judges that work on the presumption of guilt - especially when a motorcycle is involved.

Cops are absolutely above the law. I shot a video on my cell phone of a cop in a patrol car chatting away on his cell phone as we drove side by side. When he noticed I was recording him, he quickly & instinctively dropped his phone down away from his face. Busted.
I emailed the video along with his car # directly to the police HQ. Of course the reply was "he was making a duty-related phone call, which is within CHP policy".
They can pretty much do what they want, and they depend on our fine money to continue to be paid for doing exactly that. You have no case.

Interesting. Cops are reasonable people. They know when a law is stupid as chit, like the cell phone law, but their job is to enforce it. That's when they reveal their fallibility.
If I was cop, and I had to ticket for cell phone use (I would get drunk first, as the law is egregiously stupid), anyway, I would pick out the biggest douche looking people. Poor Mexican woman on a cell phone? Regular working man in an accord? Pass. Douche with his barbed wire tatoo, flat billed cap, blasting chitty music? Busted. I would even bust him for the tint. Why? Because I'm a human being with a dick streak, and the ability to enforce the law MY WAY.
Must be awesome really.
Lyons got nailed because he's in a vette. BTW, Bay Area cops make 6 figures; figure in retirement benefits, many of them make several hundred thousand a year. The vette is easily afforded by most of them, Lyons got nailed because you naturally pick on the fastest looking car when handing out speeding tickets. This is why we should all have radar detectors.

Not to hijack the thread, but as long as we are on the subject...
I got a ticket last week near downtown LA on the 110N.
Both the CHP cop and I on bikes. I was behind him following in
his tracks - exactly, to the millimeter. We were both lane splitting.
He pulled aside, stopped to let me go by. Then, he gave me a ticket for
"illegal lane splitting".
I will contest in court that he has to abide the same law as everyone else. (he did not have lights on or siren, at any time).
If I am guilty, he is just guilty. And, has misrepresented the law.
What do you think..?

Personally, I am nervous anytime I am following, or in front of an officer who is lane splitting like me.
All the best to you.

What a drag! I got one last year (traffic cam) for doing 56 in a 45 here in AZ. I was driving home from 3 days at Ron Fellow's Spring Mountain. I did an on-line traffic school and got it removed from my record. It cost around $200 - a little less than the ticket. Don't know how it works in CA.
