Default Z51 brake dust

Well it looks like I am going to have to change out the pads on my 16 Z-51 Just like I had to on my 13 Grand Sport due to excessive brake dust.
The car only has 700 plus miles and if I drive into town and back (13 miles each way) the beautiful chrome rims are dulled due to brake dust.
Any one think I should wait for more miles or is it just going to continue.
Thanks for input.

I just live with it for now. Black wheels are equally bad looking after a short drive.

I waited a year before switching to Carbotech 1521's. It was a Year too long! Have had them on my Z51 for slightly over a year, where I was having to clean my wheels every one or two trips to town (I'm 16 miles away) now I clean them mostly when I wash the car. I estimate 80% less dust and what is left is easier to remove. FWIW

I have a 2016 Z51 and I don't find the dust that bad. I can take the car out about 8 to 10 times and then I go ahead and wash the car and do the wheels at the same time. In fact sometime I even enjoy the brake dust patina on the chrome wheels. OMO.

I drive it hard with z51 and black wheels. Once the wheels look copperish-brown I know I've had fun and there are 400 dead bugs to be cleaned off the car.
I used to polish my toy cars endlessly and gained nothing from it, saving miles for the next owner
I've went 1k miles between details on the c7 and the brake dust cleans up just fine every time!!!

I agree 100%, even though I usually wipe down my chrome wheels with a damp Zaino cotton cloth after every drive, it only takes about 20-30 seconds a wheel and they look new again. Now my wife's Camaro SS with Brembo pads and Foose black wheels is a whole different story, it seems they get filthy just driving around the block.

Less brake dust is nice, but I don't find the brake dust any worse on my 2016 Z51 than it was on my 2009 C6 w/F55.
One thing I did notice though before I changed out the Silver painted wheels for Chrome, the painted wheels attracted more brake dust.
I just wipe the Chrome wheels with a dry cloth to remove brake dust and they wipe clean.
Quick and easy.
But, with the Silver painted wheels, more dust clings, likes in static cling, to the paint and just gets smeared around when trying to wipe them down.

I Personally do not want to give up the grip of the OEM Z51 pads and nice to know that grip is there when I need it.
I also go easy on the brakes which IMO makes a big difference in keeping the dust down.
YMMV

After you removed them from your car, what did you them replace with?

Default Brake Dust

I used the hawk pads on the on the Grand Sport and had good luck although I had only 9000 miles on it when it was sold
Anyone with the Hawk pads pro or con. There are some good sales on them right now.

I ran on the track with a non-z51 stingray and although we were pushing the cars equally, his wheels looked like he didn't brake at all, while mine were covered in dust.

I switched to Carbotech's XP10 (front) and 8 (rear) and now they have even more dust than OEM! They are quiet brakes slowing down to 20mph, but under 10mph, they do squeal. But the bite on them is awesome...much better than OEM.

I believe the factory non Z51 brake pads fit on the Z51 cars. No brake dust, no noise.

Yours must not have been prepped properly. I changed to the Carbotech this October. My Z51 had just had its first Birthday and had 5,000 miles on it. I had my dealer make the swap and I stressed to them to clean any and all residue from the discs. I couldn't be happier with the new pads. No where near the level of dust and as quit as 4 church mouse. I can tell zero difference in brake feel with normal street driving. I should have done it when I took delivery. DO IT!

I installed the 1521's myself. Brembo's are pretty easy just two pins to push out (assuming you don't have an early 2014 like mine where strong double-sided tape was used on the front pads, then just takes a little more work.)
I agree on cleaning the rotors of old pad residue but that only took a couple of 60 grit sanding blocks and about 5 minutes per rotor. Used both the GM recommended lub as well as a thicker one for the pad backs. Have had mine installed for a year and never a peep!
My OEM pads squeeled like a stuck pig at slow speeds when the car had about 500 miles, after break-in. That was totally solved by bedding. Never returned. However lived with brake dust for about a year untill I switched to the Carbotech 1521's. I estimate 80% less dust! What is left comes off easier.
Made a PDF of my install with many step by step pics. It includes the way I delt with the front pad double sided, very strong tape: http://netwelding.com/Ceramic_Pads.pdf

Yes I get lots of brake dust on my 2014 Z51 wheels but I just wipe them down with detail spray once a week when I drive the car. The wheels need to be done around every 50 miles give or take no big deal .
