Default Manual trans temp, slow to warm up

I couldn't find any threads about it. Even in fall 50-65 degree temps, I drive for usually 30-40 min before the gauge goes off the 100 degree mark. I'm reading off the gauge under the performance readout area for trans. Is that normal? Once I've driven for around 45-60 min, the temperature settles out in a 'normal' range.

Earlier in the week I changed my left pocket gauge to show trans temp. I noticed this last night driving home. All other temps were up except the trans. 16 Z51 M7.

Yep, even in the summer, if just cruising mechanical gears are very efficient. When accelerating, using the trans for downshifts while braking etc my temp comes up quickly! Need to create some friction! Use some of that 465 hp and a few red line shifts and watch it climb! I always have trans temp as a pocket gauge even in the winter. I can tell when the 1st to 2nd shift will get easy!
If tracking you do need the trans cooler that comes in the Z51, M7!

Seems about right, my '15 takes about 30-40 minutes to get warm.

I thought LT1 engine specs, with dual mode exhaust, were 460 hp, and 465 ft. lbs. of torque.........

I'd rather have this problem than be one of the Auto transmission guys overheating after 1 lap at the track!

I would say...because the trans is mounted to the rear axle it doesn't get the heat transfer from the engine . Takes longer to make heat itself.

I had been wondering where he got those HP numbers myself.
I believe non NPP it's 455 with NPP it's 460.

You're correct, my bad!
455 or 460 is enough to warm up the trans! Mine typically runs about 150 in the summer and have had it go to about 175 if driving and shifting aggressively.
Although the gear fluid is essentially automatic transmission fluid there is no torque converter wasting energy and causing heat or clutch packs slipping when shifting so a manual trans is more efficient and heats less. In the C6 the manual trans (at least in the Z51) was cooled like an automatic with a coil running in the radiator. That took long lines and used some of the radiator cooling capacity. In the Z51 C7 there is a heat exchanger behind the left rear fender. Both the C6 and C7 Z51 use a pump in the transmission that only works when the car is moving. FWIW

Totally normal. Once the oil is up to temp it takes 30-40 minutes until I see the trans temp go up but it is still low unless I start using the car the way it was meant to be driven.

Thanks everyone for the confirmation that it is normal. I was actually hoping there was an issue with my M7 trans to explain the crappy, notchy, popping out of gear trans GM put in here. I guess it is better once warm, but I'm not always doing 1+ hour drives to enjoy the proper 'feeling' trans. My C6 Z06 was so much smoother. I sold a Cayman R which I didn't like, but man the shifter was beautiful to row gears in regardless of temp.

Buy an auto and it overheats on the track, buy a manual and it feels like a 4 speed trans from the 70s. Love our options...I know...buy a different car. Well, I like everything else about the C7.

Get an MGW shifter. Problem solved.

Mine has been notchy since day one. Adjusted it, no change. Installed MGW (because I normally do....I like them), and then it just amplified the notchy feel so I pulled it back out. Dealer says it is normal.....imagine that.

If you haven't read through this thread, it might be worth taking a glance at. It's got a link in it too on realigning the stock shifter:

I think notchy is very subjective so we may agree on the definition.

I don't find my M7 notchy at all. The MGW is like a bolt action rifle in my opinion. The only minor annoyance I find with my M7 is it can be difficult to get into 2nd for the first 10 minutes of driving.

There might be something wrong. Can you take it to another dealer?

Notchy is definitely subjective. My reference is that my C5 and C6 were smoother than this car.

I know the adjustment drill. Probably did it 10-15 times on the C5 and C6 for various reasons. C5 torque tube came out multiple times.

All this being said, some of the cars at Spring Mountain also seemed finicky or notchy to me. Maybe all this is in my head. ; )
