Who uses a radar detector?

Get the Escort 9500ci...hardwired in, laser jammers too, plus the "live" up to date radar trap free for two years....pricey, but if you drive this car like it's meant to be driven, worth every penny!

I've had my Uniden 950 in the car for about two weeks. It is sensitive, detecting KA/K band radar almost a mile out. I've set it up to ignore signals in any band below 30 mph. It also picks up laser quite well, both from the front and rear. Above that, and out on the highway, it works every bit as well as my previous $400+ Valentine.
Of course, it doesn't have the bells and whistles of the more expensive detectors. Also, the Uniden appears to "leak," contrary to what the owner's manual says. Leaking detectors can be annoying to other users nearby, but does not affect the effectiveness of the leaking unit.
Basically, this unit for $169 on Amazon, does everything I need it to do. Personally, I think the Uniden 950 is a great bargain. If you are in the market for a good detector, but don't want to pay a small fortune, the Uniden could be just the ticket.

But Waze won't warn you about the LEO who just showed up 30 seconds ago, or just moved a mile up the road, if no Wazers have driven by and reported him yet.
As said before, each option provides information the other doesn't. Both together are better than either alone, but still not a guarantee you won't get tagged.

[QUOTE=rmorin1249;1591388023]No, I travel in and through VA often and they are illegal. If you get caught I understand they confiscate the detector and give you a big fine.[/QUOTEs
I had a remote that hid in back of the front bumper on our 99 and we went thru the gustopo state numerous times and they never bothered us as it was cloked.
The remotes are just too expensive so I have the max 2 and take it down in Virginia

I will take the extra time to drive around Virginia if I ever have a need to visit the dirty side.

Bought a V1 after getting caught going 120 in a 65 back in college. It's saved me from more tickets than I can count. Recently switched to the 360Max.
No radar / laser detector is foolproof. None will save you if a police officer specifically targets you after laying low for a while. But I would suspect that used properly, they will save you from 90 - 95% of tickets.

Well said. No matter what countermeasures one has, it's never a guarantee. If one is alone on the road, best not to speed or go slightly over the speed limit.. If there are other motorists, situational awareness is very important combined with other counter measures. Look for motorists braking, dead giveaway that there is an LEO around the next turn.
I once spotted from a good distance, a sneaky Leo hiding behind bushes from the sunlight reflecting off a very small part of his fender that was visible thru the bushes. It just did not seem like the reflection should be there. I had enough time to slow down and as I went by he shot me in the rear.

That's a great thing about the Valentine. Usually it's a bit less to upgrade, so the one you had must have needed a bit more updating. I used to update mine on a regular basis.
I used a V1 for over 10 years and it's a great detector. the only reason I went to the Redline is Virginia and DC., plus it does have better range. But sometimes I wish I had the arrows, not knowing where the radar is can be frustrating at times.

One sunny day, my partner and I decided to do some radar speed enforcement on a section of highway that has a history of high speed collisions and a few fatalities over the years.
So, he set up at the west end of the highway, and I took the east side. After I cited several motorists we called it quits-he called me on the cell phone and laughing, he said someone took a piece of scrap wood and sprayed "radar ahead" on it and put it on the highway a half mile up from his location.
It worked. Motorists from his end slowed down, while I wrote out cites.
Sometimes an old piece of 4X8 and a can of spray paint works just as well as a $600 radar detector.

The 9500 Escort is a mediocre radar detector, particluary for the money, it's performance is average across the board.
It cannot do laser jamming, laser jamming requires specialized hardware. It can alert you to your future ticket if you are hit with laser, and this is standard on almost all detectors.
Finally, laser jammers are illegal, but not parking sensors. It's a mere firmware update that switches on laser jamming.
BTW, I think any one who safely exceeds the speed limit and jams a revenue producing laser equipped cop is acting morally. Don't think a cop pick pocketing you, enriching his employer, is something that impacts our collective safety. It is legal theft and an obvious conflict of interest. In CA, cops and CHP can average up to 300,000 a year with generous pensions, an amazing retirement and ample overtime (google san jose police salaries). How do you think they pay for this stuff since taxes aren't enough? Asset forfeiture is way up there, and of course padding these benefits are speed traps.
