Default Too much oil?

I've got 940 miles on my Z51.
Car seems to smoke more than I think it should, and the tail pipes are already dirty. (It is cold weather)
Checking the oil after 8 minutes, the oil is at the very top of the hash marks on the dip stick. To the point of almost pass the overfill marks, but not quite. I would think it should be more towards the middle of the hash marks.

I don't want let this go if I need to drain some oil to prevent problems.

Am I being overly cautious?

There's no problem here. Oil at the top of the hash marks is full, not overfilled. The paranoia around this is way overblown.

The outer tips being dirtier than the inner ones is 100% normal. It's because of the exhaust valves and the internal construction of the mufflers directing most of the exhaust out the outer tips.

There are many, many threads on the exhaust tip soot patterns...

You're good to go. Relax and enjoy your C7!

DI engines tend to carbon up the pipes and I have noticed this on every vehicle I have owned with a gas direct injection engine. Most will quickly start to resemble the exhaust pipe on a diesel engine prior to the requirement for particulate filters.

Manufacturers would save a lot of grief if the standard exhaust outlets were black coated from the factory

Stingray Chevy is a great dealer and would not send the car out over filled with oil. Of course, if another dealer changed the oil at the 500 mile mark, they could have possibly over filled it, but from what you describe, yours is not. Also ordered/bought mine there.

I also have a DI TT Flex and the pipes are always sooty. Those are much harder to clean due to lip design and after many miles are permanently black on the inside edge.

Gents,
Thanks for putting my mind at rest!
I just want to break her in right.
Now if I can just keep from going WOT for another several hundred miles. How can something so easy as not pushing down a gas pedal be so hard to do?

Several threads on Z51 oil change procedures worth checking out. Early on some dealers were not up on proper procedure for oil change and over filled cars and caused problems. Dry sump oil change is different than non Z51 oil change. Better to be slightly under full than over full for sure. Sounds like you are at max fill but likely not over full.

if your car is a 2016 the oil tank is updated and should not be a problem at the full level.

My '16 Z51 was about 1/2 qt above the full mark from the factory (check hot 7 1/2 minutes after shutdown). I now run it halfway between full and 1 qt low. The 500 miles I ran it over full didn't seem to harm anything. Tracking instruction say you can run 1/2qt over full.

Ten quarts put mine exactly on the half way (hot) mark.
