Default Problem with smog on a brand new car from out of state

Hi,

I brought my 2015 C7 in from another state brand new to California and the DMV said I have to get a smog certificate, as it is new to the state of California. There is a 5-year exemption on getting smog certificates with a new car but this does not count for me.

I went to a California Smog station and while my car passed, the people could not give me a smog certificate because they said my new car with 132 miles on it now did not show a memory of smog readings. The man said to drive it more and come back and he would put it back on the tester.
Does anyone know how many miles I have to drive to kick in the smog memory? Most people do not need this cert till they sell their car.

Does some one have an answer for me? Thanks a lot I have 178 miles now. I have a lot of cars and I do not drive the C7 that much. Paper plates from a different State can be a reason to get pulled over!

This is a common problem with the cars with 50 state emissions and has been discussed in the forums before. What the smog tests station told you is true. When I ordered my new car from the factory I made sure to get California emissions so I wouldn't have to go through this. Even the NEW cars shipped here with 50 state emissions had to go through this.

It could take a few hundred miles, so drive, drive, drive. I drove mine back from Ohio before testing, so no problem, but then it was 2,500 miles.

^^ I drove mine back from Kentucky, so I passed too, but I agree, you just need to put more miles on it. I'm a little surprised you passed, I've read a lot about cars not passing without more mileage on them. You can get extensions on your paper if you need to, not ideal, but it works until you can get it registered. Good luck!

You should be fine with a lot less than 2,500 miles. Try a couple hundred miles more and see if that does it.

You probably have 1 or 2 tests not ready. Just drive it a couple more hundred miles like millpond said and you should be good to go.

I'm confused why you would need to smog test a new car that was delivered with the CA emissions sticker on the car. Was it registered prior in the state the car came from?

I went to the smog shop, he told me I need 7 cold starts, and just before the smog a 30 minute freeway relatively steady cruising speed drive.

I purchased my 2015 Stingray in Montana and had it shipped to California. It has 50 state certification, but it still is considered an "out of state" car and must be Smog Certified and Verified. The dealership that I had the car shipped to, did the smog testing. It took 560 miles before it finally passed.

I thought I read somewhere that making sure the dealer sells you a "CA-compliant version" that you didn't need to get it smogged but seems from reading this that any car bought from a dealer outside CA, say a forum dealer like Kerbeck, still needs a smog check, even if you pick it up from NCM delivery?

You can order a car with CA Emissions, but unless you bought it in CA you will have to get it smogged. I think if you buy a car from a state bordering CA and order it with CA Emissions you may get a pass but I'm not sure.

You can order a car from us here in NJ that we order with CA Emissions and have it drop shipped to CA and you may still have to get it smogged.

Yes, and don't call CA DMV because they guess. I called them 3 times and had 2 different answers and 3 different explanations. I went to a Franchise smog shop and they explain it in Engrish and it happened just as they said it would.

I just did a factory order through MacMulkin Chevrolet who is out of state and ordered the car with California emissions. No Smog test for me. I took courtesy delivery in Sacramento almost a month ago. 50 state emissions is a completely different situation.

I don't think the OP was thinking the C7 is a "holy relic", he stated that he has other cars and his C7 is clearly not a daily driver....how did you get YOUR reply from HIS original post?

Jimmy

PS. Lots of folks (me included) have Corvettes that are NOT daily drivers, just so you know.

For most people it has taken about 500 miles on the odometer for CA smog machines to pick it up. Head to the coast for a day you will be fine.

I smogged mine when I drove back from museum delivery so I can't give you a firm number, but this was a hot topic back in 2014 when these first came out.
