7speed Manual vs. A8
#22
if I did it again, I would by automatic,
automatics are faster then manuals
wife ca drive the car when needed or swap cars
driving in bumper to bumper traffic, much better
but 7 speeds are fun on open highways,

"Stick "with the manual and continue to have fun, I am not an 8 spd lover but after long periods of trying to sell manual trans vettes ( c5 and C6 Z/s) I gave in and got the auto.

Do remember that when people say "A8 are faster", we're talking percentage points that you, the person commenting, and 90% of the other people that drive them, will never see.
Drive them both, buy the one that makes you smile the most.
I was on the fence because of I93S traffic into Boston daily, but I went M7 and I'm thrilled. The clutch is light and engagement is linear, the 6.2L has torx for days and it's easy to drive in traffic. If I get sick of driving a manual, I'll hop in my sedan for a day and it reminds how awesome the C7 is to drive, be it A8 or M7.

Every car I've owned has been a manual (33 years and many cars). I'm considering the purchase of a C7 and wonder how 'fun' the automatic is. Any folks out there come from the manual world to an automatic C7?? Any regrets? Is it still 'fun' to drive? Of course I'm going to test drive an automatic (already drove a 6sp), but a test drive is so limited, I want real world comments etc.. My driving style is 'spirited', I look forward to curves and turns. I'm not a drag racer or a 120mph'er..

I heeled-toed even my two stand shift modified trucks when between my '93 and '08 C6 Vette. Always heeled-toed when downshifting, although the peddle placement was not great I was fine at higher rpm. Even the C6, easy to rev the throttle at higher rpm and get a smooth transition.
However at lower rpm's not as easy to modulate the throttle to get a perfectly smooth transition. For example the small single lane narrow road to our home (it goes around a large fountain) is coming from a 60 mph limit 4 lane highway. Traffic is moving at 65+ mph. With the C6 would downshift from 5th or 6th to 3rd when making that turn. Half the time it was fine!
With the C7, I am usually in 5th (1800 rpm) and I can downshift directly to 3rd (3500 rpm) and it is perfectly smooth. Same when on an Interstate in 7th (~1500 rpm at 75 mph.) When exiting even the springs in the shifter guide you to 4th (~3000 at 70 mph.) Perfect 1:1 gear for an exit ramp, no need to go thru two other overdrives (6th and 5th.) Again perfectly smooth transition. Same when passing an 18 wheeler quickly for least exposure to radar and no worry if the truck sees me if someone cuts into his lane, just slip into 4th then back to 7th!
In town where I mostly drive in 5th, when making a turn I just go directly to 3rd or 2nd and the it's perfectly smooth every time!

I compromised with my C6 and bought an A6 (buying used, wanting yellow and certain options didn't leave a lot of choices), regretted it for 3 years. Made it right with the C7.
Traffic is really no big deal, In slow bumper to bumper traffic I just let the car roll letting the clutch out and it will pull itself around without touching the gas.

I bought my C7 as a second car to have fun with and to me a manual is just more fun to drive. Actually my DD which is used for my heavy traffic commute to work is also stick so for me traffic has no effect on my love for a manual trans.

I've always loved shifting gears but for the C7 (2016) I bought the automatic. I have not missed the manual shifting at all. And the more I use the paddles, the more I love them. Especially in the twisties with both hands on the wheel, I feel much more in control of the car. And when feeling lazy or in traffic, sitting back and let the car shift itself is relaxing. If I were to do it again, I'd get the automatic again.

The problem is it's hard to know which you'd prefer without being behind the wheel of each for a while. I went from a C6 manual to a C7 auto. I miss the manual sometimes. I like the auto when I go to town and go from one traffic light to the next, which is most days I drive it.

The auto in these cars are great..............But it's still an auto! If you have always had a stick, like me, then you will regret getting the auto. I have had 10 vettes, 2 were autos and I always wished they were manual, sold and bought another manual. Mine is a toy, not a DD so for me, when I get the chance to drive it and have fun, I want a stick in my hand!

I went from a M7 Z51 to an A8 Z06. And if my Z06 didn't have 650hp then this car would be a whole lot less fun to drive.
So get the M7!
The A8 is boring! Mindlessly Clicking paddles is not as fun as using 3 pedals and your brain!

This may, or may not matter? The manual goes to 4 cylinder mode only when in eco. The auto stays in 4 cyl mode all the time except when the paddle shifter is engaged.

I had a stick on my last car, a Porsche and all but one of over 30 sports cars. I wanted to try paddle shifting and computer controlled launches for a change. I wanted to see if the improved shifting speed and technology that the car mags were saying would impress and wow me would happen. It DID! Zero buyer's remorse. I used to tell people that I wanted to try having a coffee cup in my right hand in my 300Z instead of a shifter. Now, I can't say that because the C7's acceleration would blast my interior with liquid in anything but a sealed travel mug.

Safety Car
Just drove back from LA to the Bay Area through the parking lot known as the 405 in Thursday rush hour traffic. If there is a place where you'll be in and out of neutral and 1st for a long time and many miles it'd be LA's commute traffic on 405! I managed to get by and I can tell you, having an M7 on 5 up through central valley was still cool!

I purchased the manual, perfectly happy and will purchase a manual again. The clutch is so smooth and engine so powerful that I find stop and go traffic not to be a problem/chore. Fifth gear gets used quite a bit. Seventh is a cruise gear and is used the least. Rev match is ok but I only use it occasionally, during spirited driving.

I learned to drive on a 3 on a tree, and if you had asked me this question a few years ago the answer would have been three pedals only. My life has changed and when my girlfriend saw my 07 LMB Z06 (she had a C5 convertible at the time) she said I love that car but I cannot drive a stick (she did try to learn), so this time I did an unselfish thing (another new thing for me at when it comes to cars) and bought a A8 on my 2016 Z51 coupe. I still have three pedal cars in my garage so I am not without one. I cannot say I love the A8 but knowing she can drive it to, is worth more to me than that third pedal.
