Default Cracked Michelin tires from freezing

A friend warned me that if I store my new C7 during winter months that the tires would crack due to the freezing temps in Alberta. Whats the deal with these tires? Do they fail from being stored in freezing temps.

Think about that. If that was true every owner in the North who stores their Vette would have cracked tires. Not happening.

I seem to recall people getting cars delivered in the cold and tires cracking....

yeah.....straight from Michelin http://www.torquenews.com/106/michel...-move-car-cold

Michelin went so far as to instruct owners not to move their Corvettes when equipped with these tires and if the vehicle cannot be stored in a heated garage, owners should consider removing the tires and bringing them into the house. - See more at: http://www.torquenews.com/106/michel....QjBKc9yc.dpuf

Perhaps not. Your O2 mask may have a kink in the hose.

The attached Service Bulletin may improve your knowledge base of the known issue of tire damage from extreme cold temperatures.

What C7 variant are you looking at? The Z06's Sport Cup 2 tires do sometimes crack in freezing temperatures.

You shouldn't have to worry about it much with the Z51 or GS or with the base Z06 tires (as in the Pilot Super Sport).

My car is a base and shouldn't have the Cup 2 tires. I have stored my other C6s during the winter, thus a little worried about my new pride and joy.

I have a little relevant experience. When I picked up my C7 base (and drove it home) it was a balmy -9 F. I store it in an unheated environment. During the last two years temperatures here have approached -30 F several times. Have never had a problem with tire cracking.

There was a problem when the car first came out about all tires fitted to Z51 or base model would crack in cold temps. I recall hearing that it was ok as long as you didn't drive on them in the cold.

There were a few people that posted here with cracked tires that were delivered in sub-zero temps when the C7s first came out. They were Z51s, dont think I ever seen the 18/19" tires crack.

'13+ GT500 Mustangs also had the same issue with the F1 G2 tires, I had a set crack and it was nowhere near zero.

I would think driving them that cold would cause problems anyhow, not just sitting.

they won't deliver Z06's to Canada in the winter months for this reason.
