Default Ron Fellows/Spring Mountain . . . the details

Just got back from 25 - 26 May owner course. Wanted to relay a few details that might have been posted before.

The cars:

All are coupes with competition seats.

All are Z51 or Z06 w/Z07.

Z06 all have the ceramic brakes and stage 3 aero installed, cup tires removed and SS runflats installed.

Some of the Z51 are non-magride, most are magride

Some of the Z51 don't have heads up

All the cars have PDR

The Z51s have cooling rings installed (w/stainless steel safety wire instead of the factory supplied stuff) The leave the rings in all the time.

Cars are running Hawk pad (but I forgot what kind)

Z51 are on stock run-flats

Brake fluid is changed out to DOT4

Trans/Differential is change out to synthetic and changed fairly often

Cars are bought new and staff puts on 1,500 miles before the cars are tracked.

Alignment is not 'xactly track alignment but something that gives best tire wear.

Tire pressure is 27/28 cold

They use steel open lug nuts

There seems to be plenty of autos both Z51 and Z06

More to follow . . .

Thanks for the info!

I take it that it is 27 front and 28 rear - is that correct?

TIA

I don't think so. I think they are running the same front and rear but she (yep, female shop forema . . forewoman) wasn't very specific. Said the were trying to get the tires up to 34 or 35 hot.

more . . .

Not a lot of track time, maybe a couple of hours in four sessions or so, all lead follow with three cars per instructor, cars rotating out after a couple of laps following instructor. Our course was 1.5 miles pretty tight one straight where you might hit 100.

All run in 3rd and 4th.

One ride along with instructor at claimed 75%.

Several parking lot drills, maximum effort stopping, abs stopping, wet stopping, avoidance in wet while on abs, visual scanning drills, etc.

Some track drills that weren't laps, practice braking and down shift before corner, trail (balance) braking, etc.

I can't see any of the three day Level 1 courses offered anymore. That's where you get your track time. I think they've done away with them sadly (as an add-on to the L1 class).

And you can bring a guest with you at no charge. I took my my son with me and he was able to do everything i did but drive. He did get some track time riding with the instructors and was out on the track taking photos. And bring an SD card to record you track time.

Thanks for this I have been wondering what is the current situation there now. Have attended I & II several years ago. Would be nice if someone who knows repoerted what Hawk pads are used and what synthetic they use in the diff and trans.

Level 1 seems to still be available as they said when you come back you could either be in level 1 or 2.

She was not very specific about the trans/diff fluid but said it was something from GM.

Interesting info, thanks for sharing. The Dot 4 brake fluid and synthetic fluids for tranny and diff, makes perfect sense to me. I will make those changes before my first track day. I prefer Carbotech to Hawk pads Also appreciate the tire pressure info and will use that as my starting point on my first track day in my new Z51
I've never seen any definitive info on optimum ride height, so when I am there in two weeks, I'll be measuring ride heights at the fender lip. and will adjust mine accordingly.
I'll be there June 12/13

I didn't think to ask about ride height but I suspect it is stock. They use Hawk pads because they are a sponsor.

I thought in the car tech session the instructor said no oil catch cans were added. The cars are truly stock except the items noted earlier.

Yes I would agree,on both counts, but from comments on the forums, it seems no two come from the factory with the same measurements at the fender lip and even different at each corner. No real way of knowing what"stock" is.
So I suspect they might be adjusting with the stock bolts to at least achieve some uniformity.
I'll report back on this when I return

I believe that we were told Hawk HPS. I didn't hear anything about lubricants other than the sighting of empty Mobil1 drums.

The accommodation:

I was staying in C5. C is across the track, through the tunnel when the track is hot. It is on the second floor, garages and on the ground floor. There are two queen size beds, TV with cable, kitchenete, microwave, mini fridge, bar sink, coffee maker with some nice local roast coffee provided. You can stay an extra night for around $100. Do the paper work when you arrive but won't see the room until after class the first day.

You have to be out by 11 am so you will have to pack up before class on the second day.

There are RV hook-ups. Guy said it was $75/day.

Breakfast a 7:45 both days, buffet, eggs, fruit, meat (bacon one day, patty sausage next), coffee, muffin, yogart, fruit plate.

Lunch 12 first day 12:30 second day burger/chicken patty, vegies, cheese, simple dessert lemon bar/brownie, pasta salad, energy bars,

In the classroom sodas, water, snacks like pretzels, nuts, energy bars

IIRC there were way more than 3 cars per instructor and I was able to hit 118-120 on the straight and I'm no pro by any means.
