Default Rear lid on 2015 C7

does the 2015 C7 rear lid close with the auto close or do you need to close by hand

my 2006 C6 you would bring the hatch down and the auto close would take over and close the hatch
I am told that the 2015 does not have that option - that on the C7 it became an option for 2016

is this true?

I believe 'auto close' is a new feature in 2016.

The 2014 and 2015 models do not have auto close. That system was first offered on the 2016s as standard equipment. Had auto close on my C6, wasn't particularly impressed, don't miss it on my 2014.

Works great. Keeps you from having to jump up and down on the deck lid to get it to shut. Mmmmmm...click.

Did not fail in the C6 that I had for years. As I said, I miss it, glad they brought it back for the 2016 C7 owners.

My C6 didn't always close correctly if you didn't lower it hard enough.

With my '14 C7, I put my hand in the slot at the end of the lid, give a quick flick of the wrist and it closes for me no problem.

I do it like the manual says (2015 Z-51) and have never had a problem. I am old fashion, love the M7 trans and the manual top. Some things just feel right.

Do not miss auto close. Just something else to break.
I did have the auto latch on an IROC Camaro that worked alright until a security guard slammed it even though I had just told him not to.

I've been at this hatch closing issue since I got my September 2013 built C7. GM hyped the "magic" memory wire vent that opened to allow the hatch to close without needing a motorized pull down! All that was to be needed was a "pull down" from the hand hold on the inside right bottom of the hatch. These are even video's of folks showing how! However for many C7's it did not work as "designed!" For some where it did "work as designed" just can't believe those where it doesn't know what we're doing! Believe me there were enough of us where it didn't work and GM warranty issues with cracked paint and hatch frame cracks from pushing to close that they went back to a motorized pull down for 2016!!

In fact with mine after 2 3/4 years I still have to keep my door open to get it to latch. No matter how hard I slam it will not latch! With a door open in closes and latches from the side with little force.

CAUTION: DON'T PUSH TO LATCH! On my C6, occasionally would still have to push down to get it to latch even with its motorized pull down. BUT it had a very ridged mostly glass hatch! The first time I started to push on my C7 hatch to latch I saw the hatch frame flex excessively, IMO (my tech expertise is materials.) I stopped! Tried many things to get it to latch even followed the one GM dealer bulletin on the subject suggestions and nothing helped. Decided keeping a door open was the easiest and safest way!

In 2013, folks at Museum Delivery were told not to press in the center as the paint on the flexing lower hatch frame can crack! There are at least 2 separate forum reports of the lower hatch frame cracking from pushing to latch! Lots of forum posts about the issue.

Since you are usually getting into or leaving the car when going into the hatch it's a simple matter to remember to close the door after the hatch! You can also buy a Window Valet and use your key FOB to open both windows fully. I have one but find after 2 3/4 years that it's 2nd nature to close my door after the hatch. In fact I can stand behind my open door and close and latch it with little force from the side. Slam as I might it will not close with doors and windows closed! No big deal for me.

With warranties ending, suggest not pushing to latch as GM may stop covering paint or hatch cracks! One fellow who has his cracked hatch frame repaired said the cost would have been $800 if not covered by GM! Composite materials fatigue with repeated flexing (similar to metals except steel stressed to half it's ultimate strength but that's a whole other story!) and over time can fail from repeated excess bending! As paint ages it also becomes more brittle. That bottom hatch frame is very thin.

If you don't push to latch the hatch frame should not break! My business involves small pressures and I find the power of small pressure differences fascinating! With a door open there is no bending of the hatch frame. As mentioned I can now stand behind my opened door and push with one finger and the hatch closes and latches. That is what I usually do. With doors and windows closed I can slam as hard as I'd like using the GM handhold from high and low etc and it will not latch. If I attempt to push to latch I can watch the bottom of the frame flex!
