Default Are there instructions to remove airbag?

I just purchased a new airbag cover for my C7 Z06. Is there instructions on the forum for releasing the airbag from the steering wheel? I have been unable to find any instructions here.

Thanks.

Look for the steering wheel swap threads in the How-To section. They go into more detail, but it involves disconnecting the battery for an extended period to ensure all residual power is removed from the system, and then removing the unit at your own risk.

It's pretty easy for the steering wheel.

Disconnect the negative and wait a couple minutes. Or pull the air bag fuse.

On the left and right of the wheel there is two small holes. Need like Allen keys or something about 3-5mm. Push them in the holes and there is two thin metal bars you are trying to push in to release the front bag. On the pic you can see the silver holders where they clip in.

I would much rather pull the airbag fuse. Way too much to reset if disconnect battery. I am not replacing the airbag itself, just the cover over it.

Has anyone ever heard of a first hand story of an airbag going off from someone fiddling with the steering wheel? (on any car?) Everyone is always freaked out, but I've never heard a first or even second hand account of one deploying.

The bigger question, does an untrained person removing this compromise the integrity of the airbag? Is there some kind of certification required for this? Looking at this from a safety perspective. I wouldn't want to purchase any car knowing the previous owner removed and reinstalled an airbag himself.

I've done this a few times. The hardest part is releasing the airbag by sticking a small screwdriver in the holes behind the steering wheel. You will need two people to push both simultaneously to release the bag. After that its pretty easy. Just make sure not to break the orange clips on the connectors to the airbag, and be careful to not pinch the black wire that runs around the left side inside the steering wheel area when reinstalling.

After taking precautions (disconnecting battery or fuse) removing the airbag isn't complex. It comes out as 1 unit after disconnecting standard electrical connectors. No certification required. You can also release 1 side at time, and doesn't require 2 people.

Is there a trick to doing one side at a time? I have been able to get each side to release, but only one side at a time.

I appreciate your concern, but no worries i wouldnt sell you my car. There are many mods tgat owners make themselves, or have a unqualified friend make, that would scare me more than replacing the cover over the airbag. I think i would be more worried if my airbag was made by takata.

Very easy to remove airbag. Now i need change out the cover over the airbag. Is there a trick to releasing the cover from the back of the airbag? There are some little rubber nubs that need to be released.

Thanks.

Default Airbag connectors damaged

Hi,

i just damaged one of the orange clips in one of the airbag connector. Now how do i remove that connector? No other damage done just to the orange clip, connection is secure, no airbag light. But how do i remove this connector now to install my new steering wheel?
