That would be very rare in November except in the higher elevations, of which there aren't any on the I-40 route from BG to the west. The first light frost even in MD, where live, is usually not until after Thanksgiving. We usually don't see the 20s until January.

Comparing driving in Annapolis, Maryland to driving across Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona on I-40 in November. That's a big laugh.

Amarillo, TX is 3,600'
Albuquerque, NM is 5,300'
Flagstaff, AZ is 7,000'

What's the elevation of the highest Interstate highway in Annapolis, Maryland.......... 39'?

The highest point east of the Mississippi river is lower than the elevation of Flagstaff, AZ. That's Mt Mitchell in NC and I-40 does not pass over Mt Mitchell. I-40 is at 2,133' in Asheville, NC, not far from Mt Mitchell.

It's also a big laugh to think that I was comparing it to driving in MD. It was just an illustration. Late fall is generally mild along that route. But, to answer your question, the highest elevation in MD is 3360'.

However, you are right. I mis-spoke by saying there no higher elevations along that route. I still think it's relatively safe in November, and one has plenty of time to deviate south if severe winter weather makes an early visit.

I lived for considerable periods in both Texas and N.California, so have made the cross-country trip many times.

Not 100% sure but want to say not far from Gallup in the day pic and near the national or state park at night. Got to LA at 4 am.

This was Flagstaff on April 26. The day before I was in AZ where the temperature was over 100!

Anyone who has actually driven on I-40 out west knows of the permanent swing gates used to block I-40 and detour traffic to an off ramp. That's because they have huge problems with blowing snow and the resulting snow drifts. One can not compare driving around Annapolis, MD to driving I-40 out west.

I-40 travelers, beware! Here's a segment of an article from the Arizona Republic this morning:

"Interstate 40 was closed Monday morning between Seligman and the Arizona (sic) 93 junction outside Kingman because of heavy snow and traffic accidents. [It's US93, not SR93.]

Sgt. Rod Wigman of the Arizona Department of Public Safety said one of the accidents involves a truck hauling small-arms ammunition, with heavy snow hindering clean-up efforts.

In Kingman, thousands of school kids were given the day off due to snow and dangerous driving conditions. The Kingman Unified School District and the Kingman Academy of Learning canceled classes."

This is NOT the section of I-40 that is normally subject to closures for heavy snow. This illustrates what many of us know to be true -- the weather is quite often unpredictable! I doubt this closure is still in effect, and even if it is, it won't be for long. Flagstaff is expected to have 6-10 inches of snow by tonight, and the snow level will drop down to 6500 feet MSL overnight. This means that anything within about a 40 mile radius of Flagstaff could be snow-packed and/or icy tonight, as well as other sections such as the one between Seligman and Kingman as mentioned above. So, be careful out there!"
