With all the complaints and issues with the A8 transmission, I've actually tried to mess with mine a few times. I figure I might as will blow it up under warranty if I'm gonna have a problem.
Mine was built at the magical transition date of 11/15, and I can get it to do some strange things by accelerating and letting off the gas at shift points, then sometimes accelerating again, and that is exactly what it takes to screw it up and make it shift hard.
Other than that it has been flawless.

Same here... It totally depends on how I treat it, normally, it is perfect (like crazy good perfect!). Mine is a 10/15 build.

Must be how you drive it, I don't drive it very hard on the streets, I only run the 1/4 and 1/8 mile at the strip maybe 50 to 100 runs to date. Just love the way it shifts when it is angry, and when it is calm it is hard to tell it is shifting.

Exactly the same for me, on WOT runs, it is brutal and fast, when cruising it is so smooth. It is amazing how well it can go from mild to wild and then back again.

Rebel Yell, had a similar experience a few months ago 2015 Z51, A8. I was approaching a traffic light that was red and started to stop. One car sitting a slight distance ahead at the light. Light turned green so foot off brake and I started to increase speed anticipating the car sitting at the light would go on. The guy was on a cell phone and paying no attention that the light had changed and he should go. I had closed the distance quickly but now had to hard brake so not to rear end the car still sitting in the road in front of me. A moment before I came to a complete stop there was a loud clank sound as transmission down shifted. This has not happened again nor have I called for power one moment then stop the car the next. My bad. The A8 they say is a "thinking" trans. When you call for power the trans gears to shift fast and accelerate then with abrupt stop the trans could not back out of up shift mode smooth enough, hence the rough shift. Just my guess.

I have not had a hard shift as a result of abruptly letting off the gas in the middle of aggressive acceleration, but I can definitely tell the transmission doesn't like it.

The same rules that apply to driving a manual apply to driving the A8. Smooth is key. If you have to slow down all of a sudden for whatever reason, use the brakes and left hand paddle. Never had a problem using that method

I only use sport and use the paddles mostly just when slowing down. I have gotten my best times at the drags in sport also, it seems to like sport. The transmission functions so nice that I would be afraid to have a re-flash done and open up a can of worms. If it works then don't touch it.

I used track mode at the track, so I could use launch control... it gave me very consistent times for bracket racing

I have a 16 (#235) and mine would do the hard shift from 1st to second only when the car was cold, I now have 5000 miles and it seems to be fin e now. BUT yesterday during normal acceleration I had to let off the gas because the car wouldn't switch out of 5th and was already at 4000rpms! First time that has happened.

While in drive if you bump a paddle it will temporarily put the transmission in manual mode and hold that gear for few seconds unless you manually shift. After a short period of time it will go back into drive.
I actually did it by mistake yesterday (like a rock head) meaning to hit the favorite button and switch songs.

To me, the C7, especially with an A8, is more of a GT car than a true sports car.

Was it in Sport mode or Touring mode?

All of this " stuff " with the A8 is not normal, period ! Something is not right ...who the hell ever heard of this crap with an auto tranny !

I have had a lot of auto tranny's sports cars ..trucks ..suv's....never encountered this " stuff ".....My Audi A8 45,000 miles ...I never give it a thought ...that's the way it should be ...

Default A8

I have found that mine is more civil if I have it in touring mode . Only does it when I first start off and then no problem ! I love the A8 by the way ! Hauls ***.

I had a similar timing issue once in only 6k miles. I did it I think but didn't feel the need to try and replicate it. Some forum member said that the proof of the A8 condition starts at 10k while another reported nothing for issues at 25k. Loving the drama!

I'm 99.999% sure it was me, and not the trans. Like you I have no need to try to replicate the problem as the trans has done just fine. I think a lot of folks (after driving manuals forever) don't understand how these new trans works. The lock up being in so many upper gears makes them think something is wrong when it's just operating as designed.

These trans are much more economical than the previous ones. We took ours to the Smokey Mountains Tuesday, and after a round trip of 250 miles through the hills, and back home the computer thingy showed 31.3 mpgs. My '07 A6 C6 would have been (while quite good) around 28. More HP, and more mpg's is a win win to me.

Disclaimer: Now, before anyone gets their panties in a wad, no I didn't by the car for gas mileage.

So you can't just help the forum member. You just have to bash him and others who own automatic Corvettes. We need more members like you, seriously
