Default How I detail my wheels and tires

As I am sure I am not the only one who is fanatical about keeping my C7 clean, I thought I would provide details about how I go about keeping my wheels and tires nice and clean. Whenever I am detailing my vehicle, I start with the wheels first. I use the following items:
  • Meguiar's Gold Class soap in a bucket dedicated only for my wheels.
  • Mother's Tire Brush
  • Mother's Wheel Brush
  • Speed Master Wheel Brush
  • Sonax Wheel Cleaner
  • Wheel Wax
  • Sponge Applicator
  • Microfiber Towels (One to dry the wheels and one to remove the wheel wax)
  • Meguiar's Endurance Tire Gel
  • Tire Wipe or cloth

After rinsing the wheel, tire, and wheel well, I start with the tires.

I quickly scrub the tire twice.

I then transition to the soft Mother's wheel brush to get the hub, spokes, and rim clean.

I then utilize the Speed Master wheel brush on the inside of the spokes...

Then the entire barrel of the wheel...

And last on the wheel well.

After rinsing the wheel, tire, and wheel well, I then spray the wheel with Sonax, which goes on green and smells terrible.

I then move to the next wheel, and after I complete the same steps, I go back to the previous wheel to rinse off the Sonax.

After a minute or two, Sonax shows the areas with brake dust in red, and is ready to be rinsed off.

This is my procedure for every car wash. After drying the rest of the vehicle, I use a dedicated towel for drying off the wheels to prevent any water spots. I then use the tire gel very lightly to keep the tires black, but not too glossy. Usually every 2 or 3 washes, I also wax the wheels, which helps keep them clean and shiny, as well as provides a bit of protection. Would love to hear what others do.

I changed to low dusting brake pads. I wash my wheels the exact same way I wash the rest of the car.

Can't beat the CCB's for making wheel cleaning a breeze.

This makes a lot more sense than the Ajax, steel wool and sand paper I've been using.

Nordic, your machined wheels are the first close up I have seen. Nice cleaning job on a nice set of wheels. I was leaning toward the machined wheels but I got over ruled.

Here in the Southeast (except for the coast) the drought is getting worse so my 2015 DD is going to have to stay dirty due to water restrictions.

I use Invisible Glass on my chrome wheels. Works well. As for scrubbing the tires, not so much. Wipe them down with damp sponge and use some detail spray. Does a good job. The wheels and tires really don't get all that dirty if you maintain them on a regular basis.

Curious how sonax would affect the CCBs. I'm not going to try. Lol

You really don't need anything nearly that strong with ccb's. Just rinse with water or, as I do, just spray with detail spray and wipe dry with a mf towel. Easy peasey lemon squeezey.

I take the lazy route and just spray them with detail spray and wipe them dry with a micro fiber towel.

+1

I've even been known to use windex and bounty paper towels

That's what I use and am satisified with the Woolies, but I don't know if they are the best. To me they are.

Wheel Woolies all the way!

I had "CQuartz Finest" ceramic coating done on my car, and they also did the calipers and wheels, including barrels. With the CQuartz, I only need to use clear water and Wheel Woolies. Brake dust just doesn't stick.

I use "Sonax Full Effect" wheel cleaner on all my other vehicles, and it's the best wheel cleaner I've ever used. I don't understand why you need to use car wash soap prior to Sonax . . . total overkill.

A member here posted a setup he built that slipped over a sawhorse I believe, with four sets of casters that were placed to suspend the weel on them and be able to rotate tire on them making it easier to detail them.

Looked great. Gets the wheel off of the car and allows for 100% access to every part of the wheel.

Scrub them up, clay them, polish them and then seal them, good for a couple of years.................... Brilliant!

I saw that post and it was a very good idea he came up with.
