Grand Sport vs Z06 - 2nd thoughts

I'm reading the large thread on the Z06 forum where very experienced drivers state the Z gets away from them, loses traction, turns to the right, violently without warning and they don't know why.
It's those kind of posts that make me lean toward the GS. OP, if I were you I'd stick with the GS. The horsepower war is getting out of hand.
What good is a car with vast hp if you can't drive it in a straight line!

If money was no object I would have a Z06 ... I actually had to choose between a leftover Black Z06 coupe and a Yellow GS convertible which were the same price ... Yellow easily beat Black since I would go nuts keeping a black car clean and I figure I use the convertible top more than I use 650 HP so the GS is in my garage. However .. if the z06 had been any other color than black .. I would have the Z06 in my garage. Sometimes I still think I made the wrong decision and should have gotten the Z06 .. but then I look at my Yellow GS Vert and it makes me forget about the Z06 ...

i am purchasing my first corvette. This is my first thread ever on corvette forum. I have just placed my order for a 2017 grand sport 2lt. My dealer said, however, that i could still make changes for the next 2 to 3 weeks before the order was firmly in place and could not be altered. He shouldn't have said that because i was and still am somewhat interested in a z06 but i hesitate because a z06 might be too much power for the street (i don't plan on tracking the car - it's just for the street). I thought initially that the grand sport would be enough and it is a superb machine. I am wondering though if it might be worth changing to a z06. I don't want to buy something that can only be used safely on a track. I welcome opinions out there (especially those of you who have a z06 - your experiences on the street). Thanks.

Change your order to a Z06. It is much cheaper than trading in your GS later. See another thread here where a member did just that with his GS.

Op. I went through this when I was in a position 2 months ago to upgrade. I went to Corvettes at Carlisle this year and was set on a new C7 Z51 with mag ride. had to have it.
then..... my best friend who owns a well known performance shop and I are talking and I start telling him how I want to add this and that and he says you're nuts get the GS.
so I looked at them. then I was speaking to my friend again and telling him how I want to add a procharger to the GS when I get it and he said.. are you an idiot? just get a Z06....
so from low 50's (rebates) I ended up in high 70s. and I NEVER LOOKED BACK. I just came in from the garage after starring at the car for maybe 20 minutes. it's like Christmas daily and when I look back at the Z51 and the GS I was thinking about I thank my lucky stars I listened to my buddy.
ps. after I picked mine up from Mike Furman we went back next week and he got one also.
Z06 no regrets, GS? once you get used to the 460hp. you'll wish you had one. the torque down low is intoxicating.

my compliment and respect
I just picked up a 2017 GS with the Z07 package 460hp is plenty in one of these. I just sold my 2013 Shelby GT500 factory powered at 662hp, raised to 735hp. HP is nice, but is it usable.......ok 650hp usable? NOPE, no Autobahn here, or unless you like jail. Keep it in control and enjoy with plenty of power with 460hp. I'm young and very aggressive but the 650hp would have killed me or gotten me in trouble. I am just as happy with my standard LT1

Watch this video, starting at 10:25 and going through 11:50. These guys (Motor Trend) are driving a Grand Sport, and comparing it to their experience in a Z06.

No question now the added tire width on the GS provides the performance usable for a great handling street car. That is what I am planning to get when I sell my 2014 next year. I can, as least occasionally, use all the power safely!

I could go out and buy a Z06 the same color as my Z-51 and my wife would never know the difference....hmmmm.

I'm 67 years old. Once I was young and aggressive and had a very fast car at 18. I never got a ticket, never caused an accident, never hurt anyone, never had any problems....and I sometimes really really really enjoyed the car and the power. You have self knowledge. That is very rare and valuable. Keep listening to what it tells you. You will have fun all your life and not make the idiotic mistakes so many make. ps. I just got a Stingray. It's the fastest car I've ever owned. I love it. The 650hp is for bragging rights or a race track. The 460 cannot be used safely and legally in most situations. Back when I was young people would make fun of me because I avoided reckless behavior. Several times had the opportunity to visit some of these heroes in the hospital after their wipe out. Two guys I knew didn't make it to the hospital. Their Chevelle 396 ended up wrapped around a tree and the big block engine in between the bucket seats. One thing I like about over powered cars is that they require restraint and self control. I know the power is there, that I could use it, but that I don't have to. A person will either understand this or not. Have fun.

Buy whatever you can handle.. for me, only the m7 Z06 would suffice. The Z06 handles the street no different from the GS, other than the extra 200hp I can tap into with a little more input from my right foot. Some may say a Camry is too much car, all depends on the individual. Whatever you decide, you'll love it. The C7 is a great platform.

I would get a cheap Z06, 1LZ, maybe even a left over.

Have you owned any other high performance sports cars?
What type of roads will you be driving on?
The simple fact is that 0-60 in 3.6 seconds (compared to 2.95 for the Z06) is plenty fast - both will do over 170 mph and corner at 1.06 or 1.2g depending upon package.
There are very few times you will achieve those numbers on the street without a visit from law enforcement.

This is really going to **** some people off in here but the truth hurts sometimes.
if you drove them both. and had the means. you would buy the Z06 hands down every time.
just because it has the extra 200 horsepower and torque doesn't mean you have to use it what's nice about it is using 2/3 of that power which is absolutely doable in the street (without looking like a crazy person)
The Sensation of that Force is what makes me want to drive this car every time I look at it.
just an observation from a former C6 LS3 owner who craves speed and torque and great handling and everything that the c7's are known for.
it's just nice having one with all this extra power in Reserve not to mention that Z06 on the front fender tells me that it is the King of the Hill. for now...
