Default 2017 Grand Sport torque converter replacement complete (with pics)

As some of you may know, my 2017 Grand Sport with less than 4000 miles on it had a bad torque converter. It was exhibiting the typical symptoms of shuddering and RPM fluctuations in V4 mode.

This is my first Corvette and I've wanted one since before I could drive. It's the most I've ever spent on a car and it was a reward to myself for years and years of hard work and sacrifice. While I can't say I'm happy about this happening to a 2017 since it was supposed to have been taken care of, I am happy that the car is fixed and is working better than it did when it was new.

The car no longer exhibits any symptoms of shuddering and the switch from V4 to V8 mode is seamless. In fact, if I am not looking directly at the DIC, I can't even tell which mode I am in or tell when it switches between modes. That never occured when it was new. I could always feel that quick little shudder from V4 to V8 before. Not anymore.

I was really nervous about something going wrong but I couldn't be any happier with the service I received from Stingray Chevrolet in Plant City, FL. Short of giving me a Z06 as a loaner, they did exactly what a competent dealership should do.

I dropped the car off Thursday at 4pm with valet mode on, of course. At 5pm, they took it for a 6 mile test drive with their laptop hooked into the OBDII port. Reviewing the PDR, I could see the RPM's on the PDR overlay jumping around even though the speed was constant. The next video showed the car on the lift the next day promptly at 9am. The next video showed an 8 mile test drive at 2pm Friday with no fluctuations in the RPM's. These guys replaced a TC in 5 hours? I found that hard to believe so someone here said to ask them to see the old TC.

I went to pick my car up today (Saturday) and I asked to see the old torque converter because I told them I was a member of the largest Corvette forum on the internet and some forum members wanted to see the part number installed in a 2017 C7. I was skeptical that they would bring it out to me but they did so I took a couple of pics.

This is the torque converter (allegedly, LOL) out of my car. The numbers were the only ones I could see. Maybe someone who works for GM or in parts at a dealer can tell me if it is the new part # or not.

This is the box they had the old torque converter in to return to GM. I can only assume it is the box that housed the replacement torque converter. Is this the latest version?

At the end of the day, I'm very happy that I have my dream car back and I can only hope that I have tens of thousands of trouble-free miles for the rest of the time I own it. I feel really bad for the others on here that are having issues. I think the biggest difference is the dealer support. I'm still in disbelief as to how quickly and efficiently they took care of this.

For those that aren't having any issues, I am happy for you guys and hope that you never will. Please understand what the rest of us are going through and yes, I realize the internet can bring out some fanatics that only want to trash the brand.

While this sucked that my brand new $81k Grand Sport had to go through this, it hasn't soured me on my Corvette experience and it truly is the best car I've ever owned. Can't wait to buy a C8 next!

When looking up 24279495, the description states that it replaces 24264542 and 24273061. Then looking up the lastest part that was installed on my car, 24280631 I see that it replaced 24279495. That means there have been 4 different "versions" of the torque converter since the A8 was released.

767guy, I don't have my paperwork yet but the pics I posted at the start of this thread has the info you are asking about. My 2017 was built on 8/12/16 with converter 24279495 and it was replaced on 1/6/17 with 24280631 which I'm assuming is the latest version.

Good to read your issue has been resolved. I'm envious of your Admiral Blue. Sometimes when it's cloudy, or my Laguna Blue is parked in the shade, I put on dark sunglasses and pretend mine is Admiral Blue.

Magnificent! They must know their onions based on how efficient they are. I would hope dealerships all over America would look at your post and try to emulate this service. Thank you for posting.

Glad that they got you quickly taken care of and that the car is running great! If you now take it out on the interstate cruising at say 70 mph in V4, do you still see the RPMs fluctuate about 50 RPM or so? Mine does this in V4, but no shuddering and like you I do not feel it shudder when switching between V4 and V8...

Thanks for sharing the TC photo...Here are my observations...
It looks like the part number on the failed TC is 24279495 (stamped on the TC in the photo). I googled the number and it actually pulls up a GM TC, so the box has a different part number than the old one and they're not putting the same part number back in it. Which now has me wondering how many different TC versions/part numbers now exist? For example, what was the original 2015 part number, because I would assume that the 24279495 that they removed from yours would have been the same as the updated 2016 TC, so is there now an update to the update (3rd gen TC) since yours was replaced with a different part number than what was pulled out of it????

lakemg,

When I take it out on the interstate @ 70 in V4 mode, my tachometer is rock solid. No fluctuations whatsoever. No shudder, no hiccups. I swear if it wasn't for the dash telling me the car is in V4 mode, I can't tell.

Something else I wanted to mention is that the car is far more reluctant to jump into V4 mode than before. On the way home, I would steady cruise and it would stay in V8 mode during times when it should have been in V4 and this is at normal operating temps.

Either they reflashed something or the computers were wiped and it's in relearning mode. Guess I need to start driving more aggressively.

The service manager did say that I would be getting mailed a detailed printout of everything that was done to the car. Not sure why she wouldn't just give it to me right then and there but she mentioned something about them having to close out the ticket first. Since I'm impatient, maybe someone with access to GM GlobalConnect would like to help out if I PM'd them my VIN?

Good news!

Mine has never seen V4 mode and never will while I own it.

Thank you! Funny you should mention that. I almost purchased a CPO 2016 Laguna blue Z51 but as fate would have it, I wound up in a 2017 GS. When I saw the first press release for the new GS in Admiral Blue with white stripes and red hash marks, I drooled all over my keyboard. Told myself that is the ultimate color combo, one step above all black which is the color I normally buy.

From what I understand, there were a few late 2016's available in Admiral Blue.

Steve R,

Currently looking at Range AFM disabler but not sure if compatible with 2017. I reached out to Range but have yet to hear back. If they give me the thumbs up, it's mine.

This is interesting. I would assume that if there was yet another update, GM wouldn't brag about it.....tough to get a straight answer out of them about anything.

The results the OP is having with the new TC is encouraging for me since I have a GS on order that has yet to be built. If there is a newer part, perhaps they're a bit closer to solving the problem....or a least they're still trying.

OP, would you be able to look at your paper work from Stingray Chevrolet and post the part # of the new TC.

The paperwork should show the old part # being returned as a core and then show the part # of the new TC installed.

Glad your car got fixes and I think you had a really good dealership that knows what they are doing on your side.

In advance, Thanks.

Me, too! Mine is still "waiting for parts" after 27 days at the dealership. They are not voluntarily updating me and every time I've called they repeat the same narrative. Perhaps I should've called Stingray Chev., driven the car to FL, and stayed in a motel until the repair was done quickly and efficiently. Hindsight is 20:20.

That's a sharp observation and I would assume there are at least three TC part numbers extant at this time. I'm cautiously encouraged by this revelation.

My 12/2014 build is presumably the original and since the first revision was apparently effective around 11/01/2015 (the OP's original?), so is the new TC the current part number? If I thought it was a real fix for the TC issues I would keep my current car and not be shopping for a 2017 with an M7. Time will tell, but we'll only know for sure what's going on if everyone can produce old and new part numbers for us to track over time. I will call my dealer tomorrow and ask them to provide this info, which I'll provide in due time.

If they have a part that works to fix why aren't they using it on the new cars?

My TC was replaced February, 2016 and the new revised TC part number was 24279495. The OP's failed TC has the same part number. Not looking too good for mine. My transmission has been flawless since the TC replacement and I have put an additional 13K miles on my car. Looks like I will be purchasing an extended warranty because I want to keep my car for more than 5 years.
