Why does the engine need to be running to adjust the vehicle settings. This is annoying with a new car that should not just sit at idle for extended periods of time while doing this during break in.

Well obviously GM expects you to be driving while doing these adjustments.

You can use the diagnostic option. Hold the start button down for 10 seconds with key fob in car and foot off brakes. Everything will light up and work as if the car was running.

I thought that I tried that. Just not sure that I called it the diagnostic mode. Will try again. Thanks for the tip.

I think they call it service mode, just don't forget to shut it off, it won't time out on its own.

Yes, it is called Service Only Mode, and it will not time out like ACC. mode. It is basically what is "On" in a keyed ignition. You can even run codes in this mode.

I do this often when I'm sitting in the car after not having driven it for a while when I'm playing with, oops, I mean making certain adjustments to the infotainment system and everything else on those 2 fabulous 8 inch screens.

I did not know that I could do this. I was not about to sit there with the engine running for god knows how long while I tried to figure out each setting and I dang sure would not screw with this while driving (I don't text and drive either). As soon as I can swap the garage around and get the C7 down off the storage lift I will give this a try.
Thanks guys.

With the battery tender on, you could spend hours playing around inside your car learning all the controls. After almost 2 years, not every adjustment comes naturally to me, and I often have to refer to the owner's manual to figure out how to do something with the settings.

Looking for a battery tender. Do you have a recommendation? Thanks!

Reverb,

The CTEK MUS 4.3 (linked below) is my recommendation. It's an upgrade over the cheaper CTEK version which GM sells for $100 as the "Battery Protection Package." I've also used Deltran's Battery Tender™ for years with great success.

Yes - I use the Service Mode often. For the M7 you need the clutch depressed in order to start the car, and I believe for the A8 you need it in Park and your foot on the brake. So...if you don't push in the clutch or push the brake, and push-and-hold the start button, the car will go into that Service Mode.

As mentioned, I recommend if you're gonna sit there for quite a while, plug in your battery maintainer.

Also, if you're in a garage or other place where it's dark enough that your headlights will come on, turn them off - especially if you don't have a charger/maintainer plugged in. My headlights come on when I'm in the garage, so I just rotate the ring on the turn-signal stem that will turn off the headlights.

Schumacher 1.5 amp maintainer from Wal Mart. About $20. Great little unit. I have a pair for multiple vehicles. It only comes with the removable alligator clips, so you'll also need to get a cigarette style plug in adapter for the car's rear accessory port. About $5 with the shipping charge, from Amazon.
