Extended Performance or Regular
Hello,
Just went to Walmart to pick up 5-30 oil for my oil change on my '19 GS. All they had was the Mobil 1 "Extended Performance" Dexos full synthetic oil in a 5 qt. container for $27.47. Do I need and is this OK to use or should I just get the Regular 5-30 Dexos at another store?

As Far as I can tell, the Extended Performance is a better quality oil and I always buy it if I can. But I am not sure what the spec is for your car re: 0W-40? I just changed my oil with the oil you bought and am 100% comfortable. But, I do not track this car and the oil temperatures are always very reasonable.

Probably should use the 0w-40 Mobil1 dexos2 that GM specifies for the'19 GS. It's a little more expensive but can be easily ordered from Amazon, Summit Racing, Rock Auto etc..

From the 2019 owner's manual:Viscosity Grade
Use SAE 0W-40 viscosity grade engine oil.
When selecting an oil of the appropriate viscosity grade, it is
recommended to select an oil of the correct specification. See “Specification” earlier in this section.
For the LT1 and LT4 engines only,
if 0W-40 dexos2 oil is not available, SAE 5W-30 dexos1 full synthetic engine oil may be used for
street use.

The 5W-30 Mobil 1 Extended Performance is Dexos 1 rated and full synthetic.

I would use the Mobil 1 0W-40 ESP Formula oil in your GS.

After some searching I was able to find the pour point of Mobil 1 (not the ESP variety) listed at -54 degrees C. The 5W-30 Extended Performance is listed as -40 degrees C. This does suggest that the 0W-40 oil would provide better start up protection and of course it would be better for track days.
It appears that the newer 0W-40 ESP is yet another advance in oil technology and I will look for it at the next oil change. But the 5W-30 Mobil 1 oil is still a fantastic oil for street use. Track use is a different matter. I just bought my 2015 Z-51 and the service records from the local Chevy dealer shows that they had been using conventional oil for their oil changes.
I used both 10W-30 Extended Performance and 0W-40 European Formula in my 2014 Mustang GT and over 50+ track events both oils provided extraordinary protection as documented by Blackstone Labs at each oil change. Not the least bit worried about 5W-30 for street use.

Thank you all for your input. This will only be used for street use, so any Mobil 1 5- 30 full synthetic will fit the bill ?
Thank you,
Rich

It's all good stuff and the 5-30 was the standard fill until not long ago, so certainly won't hurt anything. The reason that I suggested the 0-40 was your location. I assume it's going to be getting cold soon. Wife grew up a few miles from your general location.

Reasons enough for me to switch and I have.
But I would still use 5W-30 if I had difficulty getting the new oil or had some other reason where switching was problematic.

I switched my '17 GS from Mobil1 5w-30 to 0w-40 as regardless of how slight the extra cold start protection it's worth the small additional cost to me. Especially since my C7 will stay in the garage over the winter however I will start it up occasionally for a drive on a cold clear day as longs as roads are in good shape.

Average winter low where I live is in the mid-40s to mid-50s.... I could run "dino" oil in mine as long as I didn't flog it.... lubrication is the operative word.
