Default New 2017 Grand Sport and need info on the 500 mile first oil change

Hi guys,

OK, I recently bought a 2017 Grand Sport and did a search on this fine forum on oil changes for it. From what I could tell, I am entitled to 4 oil changes (within 2ys or 24,000 miles) plus the first initial one at 500 miles. Now this was the info I read here but it was for the 2014-2016 year Stingrays.

I talked with my dealer today and he looked up that I am only entitled to 3 oil changes (during the 2yr or 24,000 miles) for my 2017 GS and he was going to look into the 500 mile one for me.

Is he correct on only 3 oil changes for the 2017 year now and not 4? Also on the first initial 500 mile oil change......who pays for it.....Me or GM? I have read the GM letter shown here on the forum and in my owners manual but no where does it mention if it's covered by them or counted as one of my entitled 3.

Thanks
Mack

I've been told by two dealers that the 500 mile oil change is included.

With the dry sump engine you get three oil changes. Wet sump gets two. First oil change is due at 500 miles on dry sump engines.

The dealer took care of my 500 mile oil change. I did not pay a dime.

2014 and 2015 dry sump got 5 free (500 miles and then 4 free within 2 years/24,000). Wet sump got 4 as they did not get the one at 500 miles. Starting with 2016 models GM reduced it to 3 for the dry sump and 2 for the wet sump. You won't pay anything for the oil change - it is all covered by GM.

500 mile is included I stopped at a random dealer while driving to Florida and there was no question about this. I'm under the impression the only the next two oil changes are included but not sure about this. I will not be putting more the 10k per year on the car so i will only change the oil once a year anyway so in two years I will have to oil change twice based on age not miles.

My GS is on order. Still debating IF I will allow our local dealer (or any dealer) make the 3 FREE oil/filter changes or as I did from my "just sold" 2014 Z51, do them all myself!

Have to go into the local dealership to have the wife's BMW SUV gets it's replacement airbag per a recall. Think I will "interview" the Chevy service scheduler and if needed, the service manager re my GS, ordered from Kerbeck. He was very conscientious and honest when I had the airbag software updated recently. He walked all around the C7 with me, both before and after saying that was his practice. He pointed out a smug and would not touch it, but I did and wiped off a finger print with my handkerchief! He assured me they was no need to put the car on one of their ~14 center post lifts. He also said he will not let them drive any Vette over the automatic alignment check device that they recently installed (probably to report if you need an alignment.)

I'll ask:
1) if they will use the drive on alignment rack and not a center post lift when changing oil. Don't want a cracked rocker panel and who knows if they will use the aluminum jacking pucks I'll have in a plastic bag on the passenger seat!
2) if so, will they use Mobil 1 (which GM pays them to do.)
3) will they fill with 9 quarts and give me the 10th [so I can check the level when I get home and add enough to be half way between MIN (fill with 1 quart) and MAX.]
4) will their trained C7 tech change the oil? If not can I talk to whoever will change the oil?

In either case, I will stand behind the open bay door when the oil is changed and chat with whomever. I will give a good tip if it's done right and probably tell them that before they start!

Even with all that and the proper answers, may still decide I'm more comfortable doing it myself! As soon as I get the GS home will be changing the brake pads so why not an oil change at 500 miles etc! I'll have few hours to kill when I bring the wife's BMW in so what not ask-just in case

As stated in Post #3 & #5 you get a total of three, these cost are covered by the dealer. These are tracked by GM by VIN

You have the dry sump system. First 500 miles is GM mandatory (Free), followed by either 2 or 3 (Free)

Most dealers, especially salesman, know little about Vettes! Unfortunately some think they do and are emphatic in their opinions!

You get the extra 500 mile change free as it is a GM problem because the curing silicone in the engine seals depletes the antifoam agents in the original oil fill! Takes some time for it to cure so after 500 miles apparently most is gone.

If you don't change the oil there is a chance oil foam will come out with the burped air from the dry sump tank to the air intake. That will run down, soak the air filter and you'll have oil drips on the ground! Could also contaminate the MAF (mas airflow sensor.) GM's issue so it's a free extra, not a "normal maintenance item!"

Wet sumps don't have burped air so no 500 mile change! Whoever told your 2 was correct for a wet sump! Might ask but if they say dry sum, what's that, don't be surprised! Just tell him GM pays him for 3 changes with Mobil 1! Remind the mechanics helper working the oil change bay (who may have been flipping burgers the week before) that here are two plugs he needs to remove to drain all the oil!

See my post #7, I'm getting closer to the "better do it myself" as I did for my 2014 Z51! FREE is not worth the risk!

............read the Owners Manual. Its listed in the service interval section. The 3 services are free under the Chevrolet Complete Care Program. The 500 mile oil change is mandatory for your warranty requirements.

BTW! There is a wealth of information in your Owners Manual.

But the problem is the service manger and for sure the fellow working the oil change bay don't read the Owner's Manual! (In fairness they have lots of car and truck models to deal with that don't have dry sumps!)

I didn't mention another concern in post #7, which is the mechanics helper often working the oil change bay would prefer to just pump oil from the 55 gallon of the "Oh-So-Peachy" brand cheapest oil blend that met the dexos spec the dealer could buy!

Worse, when he pulls the trigger and starts to fill it will overflow the dry sump tank! It's not like most wet sumps where there is a "bottomless pit" below the opening and any flow rate works fine! Oh he'll clean up the spill on the top and front of the tank but can't reach that which flows behind the tank as it is too close to the firewall! That is just where the cabin air filter is located with a flimsy plastic cover! When the tank gets hot there will be an oil smell in the car for several weeks until it dissipates. Many forum reports of oil smell!

I have never smelled oil in my C6 or after 3 1/2 years in my C7 Z51-but I change my own oil! I fill from containers using a tight fitting wide funnel and pour slowly. But I also put an old towel around the opening "just in case!"

Just making me decide to continue to change my own; no cracked rocker panels, filled to the right level; no oil drips; filter installed with the proper tightness! Might as well install two magnetic drain plug, while I'm at it, as I did with my 2014!

For 2016 and newer it is 3 oil changes for the dry sump and 2 for the wet sump cars. It isn't a big deal. Most Corvette Owners don't put on enough miles to really need more than 2 changes in 2 years after the 500 mile change. The 500 mile oil change was added to the dry sump cars after there were some initial engine problems with the 14s.

Reading and posting in this Thread caused me to make the decision and end my internal debate!

Just ordered two magnetic drain plugs from Power **** Racing! Much better quality than stuff at Autozone etc. Used them on my 2014. Also ordered a PF64 filter as I was getting something from Amazon and the filter was an "Add-On Item" at a good price!

Now lets see if Mobil offers a rebate before I put on 500 miles after the car is delivered and I buy the two jugs needed from Walmart!
