Ah yes, retirement, Aruba and good reads
Ya, this retirement ain't too bad...beaching it in Aruba w/2 unread Corvette magazines, O'Reilly's "Killing The Rising Sun" & "Killing Patton". My new C7 tucked away w/only 832 miles on it and can't wait for Spring. Next trip Paris and the Normandy coastline. anyway, no matter where my wife and I travel to, just can't get that Torch Red beauty out of my mind.

I've been retired since 1999, It's a good life (so far).
We did the Rhine and Jamaica last year.
Jamaica again this year and Eastern Europe next year.
I'd love to get my car on the autobahn, but it'd be really expensive.

I second these posts. My wife and I are traveling as much as our pocketbooks will allow. We have fallen in love with River Cruises. Have done the Moselle and Rhein. This year it's the Danube. Life is short. Live every day like it's your last!
P.S. Driving the autobahn can be a blast, if you are in the right car. Have picked up several new BMWs and had a blast. A 1.4L VW Polo, not so much. A C7 would be a blast. You could try and keep up with the Mercedes, Porsches and Audis. Most of the BMWs are computer limited to 155 mph. Ask me how I know.

Yes sir Colonel, the autobahn is interesting. Watched a few 911's roar by as well as a fair amount of Audi's. Have done all the River cruises, next year we're going to cruise The Mighty Mississippi !! Have this strange attraction to the state of Kentucky - wonder why?

Love that fish as well!
El Gaucho, been there a few times when I just can't eat another fish dinner! For great fresh caught fish dinner (which is just about everywhere in Aruba!) ....Yemanja's! wood fired fish grill behind The Renaissance Resort downtown..been there? simply awesome

Damn you all you retired folks! Just rub it in with your impromptu Aruba trips and overseas adventures! My wife and I travel a lot just to come back to working our asses off...
Hey...You earned it! Enjoy it! I would rub it in too and I plan to in a few years!

I for one, didn't mean to rub it in, but seriously, being retired and having planned ahead (years ago) we can, fortunately, ( my bride of 48 years and I) afford to really enjoy life in general.

Probably depends on the job.
Every time that I think of my last job I also think - thank god I never have to go to that place again. And I had a good job with good pay but way, way too much BS. IMO the modern world of big business is insane and I don't miss it a bit.

But in my case I had a whole corporate executive structure to deal with - right on the same campus. When you get that many hungry, crazy, dialed out people together it is really hard to imagine just how many ways that it can go wrong. And after they break everything in sight they start blaming all of us who did the actual work, despite their brilliant leadership!
I hung on years past when it was fun mainly for the big bucks, but it was pretty much my idea of hell and I smile every time that I think about it being over!

Yeah, I'm not sure I would have cut it in that environment. Not that my job was perfect: the airplane recorded everything you did, or said. Controllers recorded radar and radio transmissions. But as long as I didn't screw up, I didn't have to explain anything to anybody.

I am a big fan of the beach and water (also a huge Jimmy Buffett fan), and have a huge interest in WWII (I won't bore you with the reasons). Normandy is on my bucket list. The only true reason I want to go to Europe is to visit Normandy. I would love to visit some of the Allied cemeteries and honor and pay respect to those that are buried there.
Although I am a Corvette freak I would rather be doing what you are doing.
Enjoy your trip.

Did the Rhine it was really nice, not quite as good as the Danube as the whole river looks like a Corp of Engineers project, lot of commercial traffic.
Took BMW and Mercedes tours. Mercedes was way better, got to get up close with the workers and the cars. Very interesting.
Going to do the rivers of France in '18. River cruising is more relaxing than ocean plus no waves! Op is right if you plan it right, retirement is great! Every time I'm in Europe I think how great it would be to have the Vette on the autobahn.

Burning Brakes
I slowed down to three days a week at 62 - had a great boss who allowed me to work Tuesday-Thursday. Called it quits at 65 and never looked back, although I miss my colleagues and we get together occasionally for lunch. Just got back from two weeks in Maui - not too many vettes there. Cruising to Alaska in August and Southern Caribbean in November.

3 more years
My wife and I have 3 more years before retirement but we are sure looking forward to it. I enjoyed reading these retirement stories which make us long for our time. We just got back from 10 days on The Big Island returning from snorkeling and volcano visits to snow and below freezing temps. We have been to Aruba twice loved it also. We all have our favorite places but the best thing to have after many years of hard work is our health. Here's to all of you out there good health to follow your dreams.
