Once again, the evidence is on the Chevy site. They MARKET the car as a Corvette Stingray with an optional Performance Package. That doesn't transform the car into a separate model any more than a duck can turn into a swan.

An esoteric, mundane and inconsequential bookkeeping trick of no import that few customers ever see or know about. Everything has a "code." Chevy SELLS the car and MARKETS the car as a "Corvette Stingray with the Z51 Performance Package" that looks exactly like any other option on the site. You can even get half the Z51 options separately if you order MSRC because you are forced to get larger tires and wheels and a silly spoiler on the back just to get MSRC. All that's left is gearing and a Sump package. Are you telling me THAT's enough to warrant a separate model? Really? Same engine, same body, same options, same everything except a sump. Next thing you know if you order NPP they'll call THAT a "separate model."

So words usually have more than one definition. Some are right that "base" can refer to a car model that has absolutely NO options. How many of those cars are produced? I'd bet none. But here is an ordering guide for 2016 before the GS was introduced. Here is what a "base" car costs and the way I see it in 2016 there were 6 models.

Presently there are 3 models of Corvette....Stingray, Grand Sport and Z06. All 3 models make a Coupe and Convertible version in trim levels of 1LT, 2LT and 3LT (1LZ, 2LZ and 3LZ for Z06 models). Each of these 3 models has a performance handling pkg. available as an option.... Stingray...Z51,.... Grand Sport...Z07 and Z06...Z07. For 2018 most likely there will be a 4th model of Corvette called ZR1. Z51 is no more a model than Z07 is, or for that matter, 1LT, 2LT or 3LT etc.

Z51 owner.. This whole debate is pointless. To 99.9% of the world we all drive a Corvette. Whether it's a base, Z06, Z51, Grand Sport, ZR1, etc. Nobody cares. You drive a Corvette...

Check a registration of a z51 and it doesn't mention it. Z06 does.
This is like saying the 1LE package is a model on the gen6 Camaro. It's not
And as a z51 owner I really don't care, except since in Michigan my registration is based off of base price of MODEL it's nice that my 1LT is "cheap".

Melting Slicks
from the 2016 order guide:
Coupe
1YY07
Coupe with Z51
1YX07
Coupe for GS
1YW07
Coupe for Z06
1YX07
Looks like the model designation is different for the base vs the Z51 and the GS and Z06. Different model number would indicate different models.
