Default Battery maintainer idea

How about plugging the cig. extension into the outlet located in the trunk of the C7 instead of using the cig. lighter port.

If you haven't purchased the optional C-Tek charger from the factory, Isn't that still connected to the battery in the trunk and therefore could be used as a charging port.

That's confusing. The only place to plug a tender in is in the hatch area/trunk of the c7. That power port is designed to accommodate a battery tender. I'm not sure what you mean.

That's what the one in the trunk/hatch is meant for

I disconnected the alligator clips from my battery maintainer and purchased: 12V Cigarette Lighter Plug to SAE Quick Release Adapter Extension Charging Cable, to connect into the trunk battery port. My question is: Does the trunk port remain connected and functional to the battery, if I didn't buy the optional C-Tek from GM?

Yes. You don't have to get the CTek

I'm thinking there are some confusing issues here. Just to make sure: A couple of key points: 1.) The rear connection is permanently connected. The cig port in the cab turns off when you turn off the car. That's why you want to use that rear connection. 2.) The CTEK is a competent maintainer that costs $100 from GM, but you can buy the exact same thing from elsewhere for about $60. The only difference is that it doesn't have a Corvette logo on it. 3.) Other brands are even cheaper. The key point is to get a 'maintainer' instead of a charger. With a plain charger you risk over-charging. A maintainer will take you up to ideal voltage, then stop.

That's what may be a surprise to former C6 owners (including me) used to using the port up in front of the console.

Good info, thank you. I do have a BatteryMinder Plus which I have used for many years. It has kept another battery alive for over 15 years.
I am a believer in this technology.

Yep, it's just like you connected directly to the battery! Here is a pic from when I replaced the battery this past summer. You can see the negative receptacle wire connected directly to the negative battery terminal. Positive comes through a always "hot" fuse.

Some have felt the need to connect directly to the battery-no reason!

Small Wire on Stud of Negative Terminal is From Receptacle

Been using a tender on 4 different Vettes now and I put the box on a old plastic milk crate a foot behind the car and run the wirees in and close the trunk--NO PROBLEM! I used a Schumacher tender for my 98-05-07.

I got a Chevie one when I bought the car and that is the one I'm using on my 15Vert, the Schumacher now goes on my stored boat battery

Charging a car when it is covered is an issue and I leave the back of the cover loosely fitted when I have my maintainer on.

Charging problems usually are caused by the gasses coming from the battery when it is charge, not from the charger itself.

As another member pointed out to me when I expressed such concerns, the C7's battery is vented to the underside of the car. Not an issue.

Good Point. Another indication of what an excellent design the C7 is.

Yep, even the AGM battery I installed had vent holes and the hose on the right side of the battery goes out under the rear battery compartment floor.

Even a AGM battery has the vent "just in case." If overcharged there is an internal vent valve that will release the hydrogen to reduce pressure.

I leave one window slightly open and run the cord out the window. Not fond of leaving the tender inside for several months. Don't like having the cord compressing the trunk gasket either.

Done it for years, (3 different Vettes) it is a non issue. Does no damage to either the cord or the car.
I leave the windows down under the car cover for the 5-6 months the car is stored. We have a very tight garage under the house and do not have a rodent problem.

We still have a couple feet of snow, along with a lot of sand and salt on the road, but hopefully by the middle of April at the latest car can come out and play. ( I live in the mountains of Northern NY.)

I just leave the trunk door ajar as the trunk lite goes off in a few minutes so no worries about compressing the trunk gasket.
