Moving a new ZO6 out of the snow !!!
Hello Everyone,
I've planned a weeklong vacation to drive from Atlanta to Niagara Falls to pick up a new ZO6 Corvette.
The dilemma is that they have gotten a huge amount of snow up there.
I planed to take next week off. I have to drive up there with the Corvette I'm trading in and then leave with the new one.
It just dawned me they likely salt the streets up there and I don't want to be driving a brand-new ZO6 on recently snow plowed, salted streets.
Does anyone know of someone that could meet me with a truck and trailer around Niagara Falls to load the car on the trailer and trailer me south for say 200 miles to get me out of the winter area so I then can enjoy the balance of the trip home via the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Thank you Kevin

I was hoping to find a Corvette enthusiast who's in that area or someone who's involved in the car business that might like to make a few hundred bucks or something.
I just thought I would reach out here to kind of see about keeping the money in the family so to speak.
I'm thinking that Thursday of next week will be ideal for them to meet me there load the car and take it 150 to 200 miles south of Buffalo at which point they won't be salted streets. Then I can unload the car and go on about my merry way somewhere north of the top of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Thank you Kevin

It would need to be a wide trailer with wide ramp for a ZO6. These cars are not easy to load and unload off typical trailers. If it was me I would wait a couple weeks for warmer weather.

that's a pretty large favor from a total stranger.
you're asking someone to burn a full day and drive at least 400 miles round trip through salt on their equipment so you don't have to. doesn't even factor in the transient time from their home base to your staging area. i would think much more than a few hundred dollars would be fair... like $600 plus transient expenses.

Thanks for the replies,
Waiting would be smart, but who wants to wait.
Money is not really the issue, if no one chimes in then I will look into professional transporters.
Thanks Kevin

Snow and salt might be the least of your worries. What you need to worry about is the pot holes in the road . This time of year with cold then thaw roads are a mess and the holes that are filled are filled with cold patch blacktop which when fresh cold patch is put down and run over by wheels kicks up small stones. The low profile tire with the corvette wheels I would not chance a bent rim. I don't get my corvette out till mid April due to the pot holes. I was looking to get trade value on my current corvette and did it by pictures I wouldn't take mine out if that helps you decide. You said money was not a issue, I not saying what to do with your money ,IF it were me I would see about hiring company or at the least wait a few weeks . Just my thought good luck on your decision and enjoy that new ride.

Congrats on the new Z. I would look into getting one of the transport companies to assist. Good luck getting it back home safely.

Born to run,
These are very interesting points, considering I live in basically a warm climate "northern Georgia" that has a few little freezes per year and very moderate weather otherwise.
I maybe have not been thinking very clearly about the damage that could happen in the car on the way home and I should either wait or look into a shipping company for sure.
Thank you so much to everyone,
Kevin

I agree with the others - just hire an enclosed transport company and get your car to your home safely and without any worries about salt or snow.

Come to Papa, Need to bring ZO6 out of the cold.
Hello everyone,
I have a new car that I would like to bring home.
I need to bring it from the far north where it's been snowing a lot next week to the Midsouth.
Many of you here, I'm sure have had cars shipped.
I need to go from the Buffalo area to I would think Virginia.
Any suggestions you guys can make for companies that you have had good luck with would be great.
Thank you Kevin

Might check with dealer maybe they have enclosed trailer and they could meet you part way and you could do paper work via fedex . Transportation cost might not be that costly. Some dealers around here have enclosed trailers . You made a nice choice in color . Enjoy that new ride. Dave

If you get a dedicated truck(just your vehicle on it) expect to pay approx $3 to $3.50/mile from Buffalo(one way) to whatever southern point you want it hauled to---Winchester or Harrisonburg VA should be OK, leaving you a leisurely back road drive down toward GA.

A couple of things to consider. First, is the weather forecast is for temps in or around freezing. They don't have a lot of snow on the ground but what they do have is running around 4 to 10 inches in that area. That will take a while to melt so you will encounter lots of snow melt on the roads and maybe some slush. A large part of NY State uses a mixture of sand/salt to winterize their roads. That stuff will be on the roads for a while and it gets in places you can't imagine. Salt is one thing sand mixed with salt is a totally different issue. Salt will dilute and disappear with water getting on it over time. The sand just stays there and gets wet and soaking for days, weeks or months.
They will most likely work to have the roads bare but wet during this time but as I said above there could be some slush. The most likely path for you to take to get there is to run up I77 to I79 to I90 and I190. As you get close to the lakes you will need to pay attention to the weather forecasts. They haven't had very cold weather this year so the Lake hasn't frozen and the wind will blow across a giant body of water picking up lots of moisture which it drops once it hits land on the southern side of the lake. If the correct wind conditions hit with the correct land temperature south of Lake Erie you can find yourself in a sudden pretty stout snow storm. I90 sort of runs along a ridge south of Lake Erie. Snow can get deep on one side of the ridge or the other depending on temp and wind direction. I grew up in that area and learned to drive there so that kind of stuff isn't a big deal to me. However, if you haven't had the pleasure before it can be somewhat intimidating, especially driving a Corvette with wide tires and low ground clearance. I purchased my first Vette in Erie on a day like I am describing and had to drive it across I90 past Buffalo in the middle of a lake effect snow storm and found it to be a challenge due to the wide front tires. I had the dealer install snow tires on the rear but the fronts couldn't grip much. Talk about an under steering pig.
This may be the time to cool your jets a little and wait a couple of weeks until temps go up and they have some days with a lot of sun forecast. On the bright side I think PA still limits their road treatments to massive doses of salt which will turn the car white in a few miles but it washes out of everything over time. There really isn't a lot of Ferrous Material in a C7 so corrosion isn't a big deal with a one time exposure.
If you decide to do it and do get caught in a storm you will return home a much better driver than when you left. Then it will be time to sign up for some HPDEs.
