I tried unscrewing the shift ****, but it is really tight and I dont want to damage it if it doesn't unscrew.

Removal Procedure

 1. Carefully remove the shift control **** trim ring (1) by turning counter-clockwise and pulling downward.
 2. Remove the shift control **** retaining screw (2).
 3. Remove the shift control **** (3).
this is what service information says.
i think trim ring only turns @ 1/4 turn then should be able to slide it down and access retaining screw

This trim ring  I turn CounterCW, it is at the top of the
shifter leather boot right?? It does not turn 1/4 turn
since it is attached to the boot.

This is for stick/manual

The shifter leather boot is pressed inside the ring at the top next to the ****. when trying to turn the ring c-c-w, the boot holds the ring and the ring can't be turned as is.
do I need to pull the leather boot out of the ring first??

If you center the stick, there should be enough flexibility in the boot to turn the ring 1/4 turn.
Worst case, you could take the bottom of the boot out of the console..

The ring should be the same as newer C6.
