Default 2016 Mylink/Carplay Infotainment upgrades - 2015/2014 backwards compatible??

It is a pretty good bet that GM will include Carplay and It's android counterpart as part of the 2016 Mylink Infotainment system. These features were supposed to rollout with the 4G/LTE rollout for the 2015 model year, but got delayed. The 2016 volt showed these new features at its unveiling a few weeks ago.

MORE INFO

So...what are the chances that a firmware update will allow 2015 or 2014 cars this update?

My gut tells me that it wont happen, but my wishful thinking side says since these new features were supposed to rollout with the 2015 cars...it might be possible for 2015 models...Thoughts?

Can't confirm this 100%, but I can assure you that the FCC ID for the LTE modem is not specified on the 2014/2015 models.

The firmware updates on the Infotainment system do not address any telecommunication device other than the Bluetooth radio and the Onstar system.

Hey guys, that's an important topic.

I just had my infotainment unit replaced due to a constant flicker.

Although I did ask the dealer to mention to GM that I would like to make sure they install the latest upgrade to allow CarPlay they came back with the same old one :-(

The guys at the dealer were super nice and took the inititiative to escalate within GM to get me proper feedback.
GM gave them a silly response; saying that the hardware replacement is not the issue, it's the software and that the new OS is not compatible with my chassis no (being a 2014!).

Being a tech guy, I know this is bull. Once they install the new unit like the ones in the 2016s the software upgrade will be possible. Since the unit was defective then it makes sense to replace it at no additional cost. I even offered them to pay the difference if any.

Now I've escalated within GM and let's see what they decide to do...

If the Silverado and the Cruze can do this (
) we too should be able to connect that way ;-)

The hardware in the hmi module is a pretty hefty upgrade over the 2014-15 unit. It doesn't surprise me in the least they won't install that for you under warranty. There's a company that is selling the hmi in the 2016's, it's listed at about $1,000.

No. GM has said they will not do any backward compatibility upgrades.

Yes, but they are kind of expensive! We all know that GM would prefer us to junk our and buy a new one every year.

One example, there are other vendors: https://www.infotainment.com/collect...-radio-upgrade

And another that is slightly less: http://www.ebay.com/itm/222289152717?ul_noapp=true

Is this really a statement from GM that MY15 will not be able to support Android-Car and that no firmware upgrade will be offered? I don´t see that the HID/Unit changed with MY16 in hardware but only the software...I think it is just a question of which linux kernel is running and that could be patched and it is open source software.

I found this article about the linux kernel:
https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...-versions.html

??? The HMI hardware DID change from 2015->2016. That's why MY2014 and MY2015 don't have Andriod or ApplePlay -- only 2016 forward.

I emailed these guys and they recommend using the 2016 HMI only in the 2014 and '15 vettes. Not the 2017 or 2018 HMI modules. Here was what they said would happen if you tried to use a 2017 or 2018 HMI module in a '14 or '15 vette:

I do not recommend adding carplay to your vehicle.
You will lose the ability to change and adjust your drive mode (ie: sport mode)/ exhaust settings.!!!!!!!

You will lose the time shift feature from your XM radio (pause and rewind)

The 2016 HMI’s come with 2015 mapping.
