C7 Manual Shifter: Really that Bad?
I've read lots of earlier posts that praise the performance and ease of installation of the MGW short-throw shifter. My question is: is the stock C7 shifter really that bad? - on a brand new"state of the art 7-speed? Is this something I honestly need to think about budgeting for? (Yeah, obviously I don't have my car yet and haven't test driven a manual.)

Best manual transmission I've owned yet. My Honda S2000 was great too, but I yet found reason to modify that shifter. After 12k miles, I'm not yet convinced the C7 M7 needs modification.

My only complaint is that it requires more effort to shift when the vehicle is cold. Once everything warms up the shifting is quick/smooth, the throw is pretty short too. I am happy with the M7.

I like the manual shifter. It's the best stock shifter I've ever experienced in a factory car. I have had aftermarket shifters in other cars because I didn't like the stock shifters in them. I installed an MGW shifter in my GT500 which made a huge difference and I had a Roush shifter in my 2009 Roush which I loved so an aftermarket shifter can make a big difference if you don't like the feel of a stock shifter but I've found I have no issues with my factory shifter in my 14 Stingray so I am staying stock. For reference I hated the stock shifter in my 07 Vette.

No. It blows away the previous gens' shifter feel, IMO.
As Kracka said above, it's almost as good as the S2000 shifter's feel, which was widely praised. Having previously tested a C6, and not liking its clutch & shifter, I made sure I test drove a C7 prior to pulling the trigger.
For me... it's great. Nothing to change.

On c5s, always changed out the shifters.
On my c6, I never did, nor do I plan to on the c7.

You should try to shift an old Ferrari when _its_ cold.... most of the time you gotta skip 2nd gear and go into 3rd when its cold.... once warmed up it shifts wonderfully...
As to the shifter on the C7 - as good as anything I've ever shifted and that includes five Porsches and BMWs....
I'd do nothing to the C7....

Another vote for the stock shifter. Although this is my first manual car in many years, the shifter seems easy to shift and has a pretty short throw.

Cue Ball Size Shift Know Helps Getting Into 5th thru 7th and Shortens Throw ~12%

I only drive sticks and always pay particular attention to any post regarding the feel of the shifter and over the past 2 or so years, I cannot remember a negative comment about the feel other than maybe some initial difficulty in finding 6th and 7th gear.

The stock shifter works fine but I changed over to the MGW and simply love it. It takes what is a good shifter and eliminates all the slop induced by the rubber bushings and plastic shifter button on the bottom of the stock unit. It becomes very "mechanical" with the MGW, you can feel all the gate actuations and with it being a shorter shifter the effort is increased but overall I'm very happy with the upgrade, YMMV.

it's a good shifter but here's a few things I've noticed...
Cold start getting into 1st requires just a little more effort than I'd expect. Once it's put into 1st a few times it's fine the remainder of the drive.
In addition, it can take some getting used to going from 4th to 5th vs 7th. In addition, downshifting from 7th to 6th you may find yourself going into 4th.
Lastly, not a fault of the shifter, but the transmission ratios could have been handled better. Why from 3rd to 4th is there a HUGE gap on Z51? 3rd ends at around 104mph and 4th takes you to almost 150. Should have made 5th 1:1 and a 4th gear less steep.
