Do the stepped headers or the 1/78 require tune? or is it fine to run them without tune? Check engine light?

Yes, ALL Long Tube Headers require a Tune.

Hi chip,

Might be a silly question, but why do LT headers require a tune and mid headers not require a tune?

Will LT throw a CEL or is the tune needed just to optimize performance and benefit of the LT's?

I plan on getting a diablo, but was wondering what will happen if I flash back to stock tune for service, or if i can safely drive it back from the shop after header install and before tune.

Thanks.

The short answer is...

Long Tube Headers move a lot more air.

This makes the car Lean
They need a tune to correct the Air/Fuel Ratio

It will - for sure throw a CEL - Right and Left Bank with LT Headers. So it will also throw a
CEL if flashed back of a service department visit.

You can drive it. It will idle and drive like crap, kinda like a mis-adjusted carburetor
back in the day. Some have reported the car going in to Limp Mode. In any case
I would stay low in the RPM's. You would not want to drive it to work and back everyday
for a week, kinda just to get home

Hope that helps

Regards
Chip

Thanks for the prompt response. So I plan an doing cai, ported tb, ported manifold, diablo tune, and changing exhaust to the axle and leaving NPP stock mufflers. What headers and x pipe combo (with cats) would you recommend if I wanted to be able to flash back the tune to stock. If I did everything but left the stock exhaust manifolds and just changed the x pipe, how much HP would I be leaving on the table? 20?

I hate trying to guess HP and Torque in such a finite way. The truth is
you can never really tell until you get a good tune and a dyno run and
then 2 cars prepared the same way may be 10 HP different...

If you want to do the above, I would get ARH Mid Length - Corsa or
Borla X-Pipe - Have ECS Flash a tune and then Can it.

Having said that, if you are going to do all of the above, LT Headers
are really the only way to go. Why would you spend all that time and
money and then just choke it off at the exit?

I get the Service Department Re-Flash warranty thing, but I'm telling
you, if you have a major problem - they will find the re-flash, so the
point is really that it serves you no purpose.

You really can't have it both ways.

Regards
Chip
