C7 Z06 Overheating Problems Exposed
Although on a slightly different vein... this month's issue of "Corvette Magazine" found the editorial aimed squarely at the Z06's engine overheating problems. Below is the cover and below it is the editorial, which implies the smaller supercharger is the culprit and offer's Callaway's fix...

I now own a C7 and was looking at Exhaust mods when I came upon your tread. Pictures are great based on what I am hearing the problem seems to stem from heat transferred from the butterfly valve and shaft to the plastic actuator housing. wrapping the exhaust pipe only in the immediate area of the valve will cut some radiant heat transfer. I suggest attaching some Alum plate between steel valve actuator plate and exhaust pipe maximizing the contact area to act as a heat sink and cooling fin. Any thing you can due to transfer heat away from all the steel butterfly valve(add cooling projections ) will result in lower temps on the plastic. **** poor engineering on GM'S part

I find the Callaway fix a tough pill to swallow. Any real upgrade in water/oil cooling would come with an increase in the 21kw of heat rejection in the C7 Z06. There is 0kw increase in the heat rejection with a supercharger swap.

I just killed another set of actuators while on track this weekend. Does anyone know if there has been a part upgrade?
I also have a Borla X pipe on their since the last visit to the dealership.....do you think this would cause a warranty issue. I actually thought the exhaust might run cooler without the second set of Cats.
Thanks everyone.

There is no part upgrade or solution other than what another member (X25) did and cut that section of pipe out and replace with with straight through pipe having the actuators just sit there. Tadge confirmed that the '17+ GS manual and Z51 manual will no longer have the actuators, so they obviously recognize the problem but nothing for those of us with '14-'16's.

... and here's the link to the aforementioned solution:

I've so far had 4 track days with no issues, and hope/expect to never have any.

I have 8 - 10 track events on my Z51 with no (known) AFM issues.

Just wondering if there is an updated part/solution available for this issue yet?
I received these CEL codes while running an event at VIR last October.
I've been loathe to take it to the dealer as I was able to get it past inspection & it didn't seem like there was any solution other than removing these & locating them next to the exhaust (which is quite frankly, ridiculous), or keep returning to the dealer when these continue to fail during track events due to heat.
Thanks!

We can take care of you on the AFM issue. We are holding our price on AFM delete modules at the discounted rate and will have them back in stock within a week or two

If that is indeed true, then it is utter BS.
I was looking at trading in for a 2017 Z; not if I get treated this way.
How do you get GM Customer Care involved or request an area rep do the same?

SA is claiming that GM will deny the warranty since my car has been tuned. Said they require an ECU dump due to the cost $2k for the parts.
If that is indeed true, then it is utter BS.

Your tuner should just tune the AFMs out and don't use the feature.

I think they still test during start up and will still throw cel. At least mine did, even after not having 4 cyl mode anymore.

Ok. However, the AFM delete module replicates the AFM communication back to the Chassis Control Module (CCM) with expected response / signal. I'm guessing tuners can't modify CCM like the ECM. Put the car on jack stands or lift, takes 5 minutes to install. Unplug AFM connector from exhaust valve, plug in delete module, secure it,... Problem solved. I'm very thankful for this solution because I was about to buy a z06 just for the removed AFMs. Ha!
