Shot you a text FYREANT...
If the cap went forward of the pump assembly it should be sitting in valley or drop towards oil pan... Definitely pull the valley cover off... Could also have went back into the outer lower spring sitting on the assembly and that's it is stuck in there.

I feel your pain, bad thing about wrenching is dropping stuff.
My 1/2 hour catch can turned in to hours as I dropped a socket. A few hours to find and fish out. Wish you the best of luck here and it comes out soon!

LONG SHOT, is to take a mighty vac and put a small tube in the end using pvc to reduce the hose ID, and a small diameter pipe and try to suck it up onto the tip of the mighty vac extension.
Gotta use some creativity but it worked for me once before, sorry to hear of you delima but good luck

I have gotten some good advice from a few people include Matt @ FSP, (thank you!).
Small update; I started trying to fish it out again with the magnet and have been slowly rotating the assembly to move the crack out of the way to get to the bottom in each of the galleys. The good news is the assembly is freely rotating so it doesn't seem that it got lodged anywhere critical so far. Bad news is I haven't gotten it out yet.
Stay tuned.. Same bat channel..

So sorry to hear... sounds exactly like something I would do. I think your idea of the magnetic drain plug might catch it. I have them in all my cars and 2 in the dry sump system in the Vette.
Wondering about when you get it out, if you could magnetize it so it would stay attached to the end of the pump rod?

How magnetic was your cap? Mine was about as magnetic as one of those cheap magnets you get stuck to the front of a phone book advertising some lawyer office.

I have one that I just tested,GM part#12596509. It had NO magnetic pull at all... Period!
Perhaps the pump post is magnetic, or some fit tighter than others.
I have on hand, along with gaskets and new metal hose, to be used when I go with E85 kit, later this year.

Thinking about the reassembly once you find the cap...
Wouldn't a small dab of grease or heavy oil under the cap provide enough "stick" temporarily to allow for safer reassembly?

Funny you say that, that's exactly what I thought right after at fell in was that I should have used some Vaseline or wheel bearing grease to ensure that it really stuck while I reassembled..

Ahhah! The old horse barn door locking conundrum!
Sorry for your mess Ant. I hope you find that rascal without disassembling the whole damn motor!

Spent about 3 hours tonight using an LED snake light and sticking my face all the way into the valley at each spot looking in as I rotate the crank to see if I could see it on the oil baffle. No luck. The oil baffle is very solid, as in barely any places for something to go through or around it. Also, the oil baffle has extremely little clearance it seems between itself and the crank . I'm running out of tricks to try.
It's looking more and more like I need to find a way to pull the pan. I am wondering if anyone has ever been able to shortcut getting the pan in and out in these. My thinking is if you put an engine crane on the motor, and pull the nuts that hold the motor to the motor mount, you may be able to lift the motor a couple inches. If so there may be enough room to get the pan pulled without pulling the motor out of the car, or without having to drop the cradle.
