Default "Service Rear Axle" - What was your outcome?

Fired up my Z51 M7 on Sunday in my driveway and as I put it in reverse without having started to move, I got a message on the dash display:

"Service Rear Axle"

I e-mailed the dealer and service manager said he checked and cause may just be a loose connector. But I searched on here and it seems that message can end up requiring a complete differential replacement in some cases.

For those of you that have had this message, what was the diagnosis at the dealer and what was the eventual outcome? What fixed it, and di message re-occur?

On my early VIN 2014 it was a loose battery cable!

Some others haven't had that luck and they ended up needing a new rear end.

Picked up my car from the dealer today and all they said was that they did a software upgrade for the rear axle, and no service. No repeat message yet.

I wonder if there is a way to monitor the rear differential temperature especially when tracking the car. I had the rear differential fluid replaced after the first and 2nd track day and the fluid was dark color.
