Default I don't understand

On the inst panel, there is one display that shows the best mpg and the average mpg for 25, 50, and 400 miles. It's the one with the instantaneous mpg bar graph.

Why is the "best" mpg for 25 miles HIGHER than the "best" mpg for 50 and 400 miles? In fact, the "best" mpg for 50 miles is higher than the "best" mpg for 400 miles.

Shouldn't the "best" mpg be the "best" mpg for any distance? If not, what is the meaning of "best" mpg?

Think about it in these terms...what's the avg temp for 1 month vs 6 months vs 12 months.

The "Best" is the Best Average you've achieved over the past 25 miles.

So if you normally drive agressive for the past 400 miles, and your constant mpg is, say, 15mpg, all three displays will show 15mpg, and say you reset the diplays so the best is 15mpg.

Now suddenly, you drive super nice, but only drive supernice for 25 miles. Your 25 mile average is now 30mpg, but because you've only driven supernice for the past 25 miles, your 50 mile average is now 23mpg, and your 400 mile average is now 16mpg. Since these are the highest numbers, these will be recorded as "Best."

Now, if you drive aggressively at 15mpg again, your averages will go back down to 15mpg, but your best will remain at those values you saw above.

Hopefully that helps.

First, I haven't reset those things in thousands of miles. Secondly, why isn't the best average obtained in the last 25 miles the best average obtained in the last 400 miles. After all, best is best.

Of course what isn't being shown is the amount of miles used in the calculation. That shouldn't make a difference from my perspective. If I got a best average of 30.4 mpg over a 10 mile stretch in the last 25 miles then I also got a 30.4 mpg over the SAME 10 mile stretch in the last 50 miles, why are the displays different? Obviously they're changing the number of miles over which the "best" is calculated. That isn't right, making the display meaningless.

I would like to know how this number is calculated.

it's calculated over a certain % of distance traveled for each interval. Let's say 20% of distance is how it's calculated. Well, 20% of 25 is 5 miles "best" average, but 20% of 400 is 80 miles. If they calculated "best" for 30 second time frame it's kinda useless...

Disclaimer: I made up 20% of distance as an example. i don't know the actual numbers.

What are you asking?

in a 25 mile space your best MPG is x amount, in a 50 mile space your best MPG is y amount, in a 400 mile space your best MPG is z.

x can't be worse the y and y can't be worse than z

Here are the screen shots:
Last 25 miles:

Last 50 miles:

Last 400 miles:

As you can see, the BEST MPG in the 25 screen is 30.5; the BEST MPG in the 50 screen is 28.7; the BEST MPG in the 400 screen is 20.0. There can be nothing better than BEST.

Therefore, the BEST mileage in the LAST 25 mile screen should be the SAME as the BEST mileage in the LAST 50 mile screen and the same for the LAST 400 mile screen.

The last 25 miles is included as part of (it's 1/2) the last 50 miles so how in the world can the BEST be LESS in the 50 mile screen? Same for the LAST 400 display.

The last 25 miles of my trip is part of the 400 miles and the BEST for the 400 miles CANNOT be LESS than the BEST for the included 25 miles. BEST is BEST; the BEST MPG in the 400 mile trip was incurred sometime in the LAST 25 miles, according to the display. So, why isn't THAT the number that shows up in the 50 and 400 screen shots? Is the LAST 25 miles NOT included in the LAST 50 miles?

I see your point the the last 25 miles was also within the last 50'ane the last 50 miles was within the last 400, but it's the highest running average you experienced over the total number of miles. Not sure how that's calculated. The average figure shown is more representative of how well or poor you did.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner!!!

I really would like to know how the "BEST" values are calculated. It is obviously different than how I think they should be calculated.

It is not the highest running average over the total number of miles but it is calculated over some unknown number of miles. Obviously that unknown number of miles is different in each of the 3 displays.

I totally agree with your last sentence, if indeed that is the actual "average" for each of those distances.

Your Best Average was 30.5 over a 25 mile length, since the last time you reset.

Your Best Average over a 50 mile length was 28.7. But your last 50 miles, you only averaged 17.8 mpg. But at some point before that, you drove for 50 miles in such a way that you averaged 28.7 mpg.

It's a race car. The car shows you mpg for different distance intervals as a means of showing you what kind of mileage you're getting on short distances or long distances. If you drove 200 mikes to the track and got 25 mpg, but you drove 25 miles on the track and got 10 mpg it shows you both.

I think this is the differentiator you're looking for. Your average is the most recent 25/50/400 miles. Your best average is the best for any given 25/50/400 mile segment since your last reset.

OP. . its not "Best"... its "Best AVERAGE".. your missing the most important word!.

Best AVERAGE over 25 miles driven
Best AVERAGE over 200 miles driven
Best AVERAGE over 400 miles driven

Since your last reset.

Nice try, but you're missing the word "LAST".

You may be right, though, in that the 30.5 showing on my 25 screen hasn't changed in thousands of miles. Obviously it isn't the "LAST 25 MILES" but just some random 25 miles since the last reset..

Display doesn't tell you anything meaningful.

I was perfectly content to go through life with an overly simplistic understanding of what was displayed in that dash.

Now this.

I hate you CP.

I think this is very straightforward and clear,.

It's showing the average MPG for the last 25 miles on the right. It's showing the best 25-mile average you've gotten on the left. The little graph in the middle shows instantaneous MPG.

Now, whether or not it's accurate is a different question, but I digress.
