Default THE C7 Z06 Cooling Solution from LG Motorsports

Link to original thread: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...torsports.html

Hi guys,

I know everyone has been asking about this for a few months now, and while we are still a few weeks away from parts shipping to customers it is close enough for you all to get a sneak peak at what we have been doing.

As some of you already know the C7Z06 on track at speed has some cooling issues. We found this during baseline testing the car, with Lou behind the wheel.

Our test car details
  • 2015 Corvette Z06
  • A8 automatic transmission
  • Z07 package with level 3 aero
  • Cup tires removed and replaced with Michelin Super Sports for test use
  • Motul 300V 10w40 oil used in all tests.

Baseline test
Motorsports Ranch, Cresson TX
77 degrees, sunny, light to no wind
Less than 10 mins after leaving pit lane for the track with water temps at 150 degree's the car had went into limp home mode due to over heating water and oil temps.

The car was 100% stock at this point.

Fast forward

Modifications done
  • LG C7 Super Cool radiator
  • 170 thermostat
  • LG HD trans cooler (replacing the fender cooler)
  • LG Prototype Stage II cooling system

LG Stage II cooling upgrade, no trim installed

LG inner fender vent

The above pictures are PROTOTYPE TESTING UNITS ONLY, final nose design and trim panels (carbon fiber) are not installed or shown in these pictures.

Testing data

Cooling test
Motorsports Ranch, Cresson TX
75 degrees, sunny, light to no wind
This time we started the car every session at full operating temp (water 190+, oil 200+) and every session of the day the car ran at least 16-18 mins on track with stable water and oil temps in a much safer range. The only thing that took us back to the pits was the stock carbon brakes failing, resulting in a loss of brake pedal. (our cooling ducts were not installed at this time, just the OEM brake ducts). Water temps have now fallen 40 degrees F, and oil temps have dropped over 69 degrees! With the final trim ducts, and seals in place we should see slightly more temp drops on the car. As a side result of this we have also seen intercooler air temps drop 15-20 degrees too!

We will be going back out for brake duct testing with the final nose piece on the car.

You will also see our coolers used in another kit coming soon as we have been working with another Corvette specialty manufacturer during final testing to supply them coolers and parts.

Test Video Full length

Key Notes
  • All coolers, lines, fittings, and ducts will be supplied
  • Template or pre-cut nose can be supplied for install
  • No loss of brake ducts
  • No loss of aero downforce (should increase front downforce)

PRICING AND RELEASE DATE COMING SOON

Nice! looks great too. some may want a black mesh option for a bit more hidden look.

No...when we base lined the car it was pretty much room temp when he pulled out of pit lane. We had spent the day running the Aston's and ended the day with a base line on the Z06 so it had cooled off while the race cars were on track. The car came off the track at 265 water, 334 oil temp.

When we went back out with the new coolers in it, I made sure the car was fully up to temp so we could try and make it a bit harder on the car starting at 200 degree water temps not stone cold.

o ok, i think im misreading what your saying then.
i read it as saying that at 150* water temp the car goes into limp mode.

i re read it and get what you were saying now.

does the c7 use the engine coolant to cool the supercharger or are they separate systems?is the heat from the supercharger heating up the oil more than a n/a car does?

on the 2003-06 amg "55"(e55.cls55,sl55) cars, the first thing we do is separate the supercharger cooling by adding a reservoir.some use a small power steering reservoir from bmw but the best is a big trunk tank that can hold a bag of ice.also upgrade the electric water pump and heat exchanger and lines.some would even add a meth kit to help cool the intake temps.

still don't understand why gm thought it would be a good idea to put a supercharger on a car designed for the track.

I will be surprised if we see the c7z waxer crowd cut half the bumper away.

This wasn't really made for those guys...they don't have the cooling problems that the track guys do.

The blower has it's own pump, own cooler, own reservoir but that cooler blocks the entire nose opening for the radiator.

Now this is a solution that actually looks engineered with enough capacity to work properly.

GM really missed out when they scrimped on the nose opening size on both the C6Z and C7Z.

The Asian race series C6 nose with side dual oil coolers instead of foglight openings seemed like the best executed idea I have seen.

I think a lot of people have also missed the fact that the C7 uses a smaller radiator than that of the C5 and C6 cars, all while adding HP to them.

Very excited about this. Just worried either the price or install complexity will make me puke.

I should have pricing knocked out with all of the options I hope by today or tomorrow. They are a little late on getting back to me on tooling pricing for the ducts but we are getting there.

The install, takes some time but the only thing you have to move to do it is the horns and horn bracket. There is enough room there to do it all. Now we will be offering a new GM fascia with the holes pre cut and we can even install them into the nose prior to shipping as well. We will NOT be doing a paint service however due to the complexity of having a 100% matching paint and keeping it from damage in shipping on such a large part.

What do you guys do about rocks and stuff hitting the exposed radiators?

What do you do about all the rocks and track tire rubber beating the heck out of the radiators from behind due to the wheel wells being open to exhaust air?

I guess I do too much following and not enough leading...

There are screens over the inlet as you can see in the painted pics, and on the outlet there are louvers...if the rocks can somehow go forward across the flow of air, and dodge the louvers and work their way in there it would amaze me.

Great to hear of a solution! I'm surprised the A8 survives tracking too.
