Confirmed: New Z06 Automatic will "Shift Fast as Hell"
Chevrolet seems to be releasing a tidbit every week on the 2015 Corvette Z06 that makes me want one even more.
Not that the 650 horsepower didn't sell me on the car, but hell, this baby just keeps getting better.
The latest news is confirmation that the new Z06’s eight-speed automatic transmission will shift faster and smoother than the dual-clutch automatic in the Porsche 911 Turbo S, according to an Automotive News report.

That's great and all, but I'm still wanting an independent review. This "news" is still coming from a GM engineer, I hope he's right, but what's he supposed to say?

It isn't the upshifts that count all that much. It is the downshifts as you are braking toward a corner you don't want a transmission that gets hung up on when to shift and thus becomes unpredictable as to when a shift will happen.

I don't believe the new z06 A8 will make the Audi r8 v 10 irrelevant,
The R8 is a beautiful exotic although
I do think the z06 will smoke the Audi R8 v 10 on the track.

As an owner of an Audi with an S Tronic 7 spd DCT I am very anxious to see how the A8 performs across a broad range of driving conditions.
What makes the S Tronic so good is how it handles all elements of the driving experience in both sport and normal modes. The programming is so intuitive that I rarely shift the car myself as the Sport mode does a better job than I can in gear selection and anticipating down shifts to have me in the best gear to exit a turn and apply maximum power.
Hoping that the A8 is a strong perfomer in more than just up-shift speed.

Got to agree. All we hear is how smooth and fast the upshifts are vs the PDK and absolutely zero mention on how fast or effective downshifts are. I really need to see an independent review. I am so torn on the trans and since this will be a fully dedicated track car for me, I need to make sure I pick the right transmission. Unlike a DCT, since this trans has a torque converter,I don't get penalized a point ratio and essentially would have a small advantage. However, if it isn't effective on downshifts, then it will be rendered useless for my use. May just need to go with the tried n true manual trans but time will tell...

I will be ordering my Z with the A8. I do have concerns as this is the first year for this tranny what will be the pit falls? Don't usually like first year trials however this is supposed to be so fast I must have it. As far as comparisons with other cars I don't put much stock in it. All depends on who is driving the car and what their biases are. Anyone can be convincing as they want need to see numbers.

The transmission itself may be able to shift fast, but what's important is the time delay from when the driver taps the paddle, to when the next gear is fully engaged. That delay needs to be short, and the shift delay needs to be fully predictable, both up and down, to be able to start to compete with a PDK.
I'm hoping this will be the case with the 8L90, but we'll just have to wait.

Anyone know if the A8 will retain the same paddles as the current A6 (in regards to having up-shifts on one paddle and down-shifts on the other)? I'd really like to see them go to pull (either paddle) for an up-shift and push (either paddle) for a down-shift.
